We were happy to welcome the United Nations Secretary-General His Excellency António Guterres, as well as President of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly His Excellency Dennis Francis, to the Punggol Regional Library recently. His Excellency António Guterres was joined by Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Dr Janil Puthucheary, UN Executive Office of the Secretary-General Under-Secretary-General for Policy Mr Guy Ryder, UN Resident Coordinator in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam Ms Karima El Korri, Permanent Secretary (Law) and Second Permanent Secretary (Foreign Affairs) Mr Luke Goh, and National Library Board’s Chief Executive Officer Mr Ng Cher Pong. We shared with them about the initiatives at our first LAB25 (Libraries and Archives Blueprint 2025) library to make reading, learning and discovery accessible for everyone. During the visits, both Excellencies were introduced to the Accessible Collection and various accessibility features, including Borrow-N-Go for wheelchair users. They also toured the creative spaces such as the Stories Come Alive Room for children, and MakeIT makerspace for adults and seniors. Want to experience these exciting and accessible ways of discovery firsthand? As part of NLB’s ongoing efforts to rejuvenate our libraries and offer fresh services, spaces and experiences for patrons, library@orchard will be temporarily closed for a revamp from 28 October 2024. The library will be reimagined and recreated to enable new ways for everyone to read, learn and discover. This includes new tech-enabled interactive and immersive spaces to aid learning and discovery, as well as a new children’s section. New elements will be introduced progressively, and the revamped library is expected to be fully open in the second half of 2026. Ahead of library@orchard’s temporary closure, join us at “Design Is For Everyone: A decade of design, arts and community” to look back at the library’s journey in promoting art and design. You can share your memories of the library at the community wall, and also create your own memorabilia at the activity booths on 26 and 27 October. 📅 8 October to 27 October 2024 ⏰ 11am to 9pm 📍 library@orchard 277 Orchard Rd, #03-12 / #04-11 orchardgateway, Singapore 238858 For more details, check out the LearnX Arts Facebook group at https://lnkd.in/gmD_rqTN, and library@orchard’s Eventbrite page at https://lnkd.in/gtNSss8x. #LAB25

With over 200 guests, the celebration of 20 years of kidsREAD was held at the National Library Building today! Hosted by Minister for Digital Development and Information, Mrs Josephine Teo, Guest-of-Honour President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Ms Jane Ittogi joined in the celebration and even conducted a storytelling session for the book “The Noisiest Tree” by Singapore author, Evelyn Sue Wong, with two kidsREAD Young Alumni, Rudra and Yit Sim, for the children at the event. Minister Josephine Teo lauded the success of kidsREAD over the past 20 years, and recognised the contribution and support of our dedicated volunteers, donors and partners. This programme complements the support given in schools, providing every child the opportunity to discover the joy of reading, for children aged 4 to 8 from less privileged families. An expansion of kidsREAD with a last-mile initiative, kidsREAD@Home, aims to reach out to more children and families in rental flats, by bringing the programme directly into their homes or void decks. Through this, NLB hopes to continue to spread the joy of reading and learning among children, and welcome more like-minded partners, donors and volunteers to join us in expanding opportunities to all. #LAB25 #LAB25Equaliser #LAB25LearningMktplace Photo 1: President Tharman and Ms Ittogi, together with Rudra and Yit Sim, narrated the story “The Noisiest Tree” by Singapore author Evelyn Sue Wong, for the kidsREAD children at the event.
