About us
Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is Singapore’s national performing arts centre and one of the busiest arts centres in the world. Since its opening in 2002, the centre has presented more than 53,000 performances and activities, drawing 34 million patrons and 116 million visitors. This architectural icon, with its distinctive twin shells, houses world-class performance spaces complemented by a comprehensive range of professional support services. Its two main venues are the 1,600-seat Concert Hall and a Theatre with a capacity of 2,000. Esplanade’s vision is to be a performing arts centre for everyone and it seeks to enrich the lives of its community through the arts. The centre’s programming is guided by its mission – to entertain, engage, educate and inspire. Its year-long arts calendar of about 3,000 performances presented by Esplanade, its collaboration partners and hirers cater to diverse audiences in Singapore and span different cultures, languages and genres including dance, music, theatre, visual arts and more. More than 70% of the shows that take place each year at the centre are non-ticketed. Esplanade regularly presents world-renowned companies and artists that attract international attention and add to Singapore’s cultural vibrancy. The centre is also a popular performance home for arts groups and commercial presenters who hire its venues to stage a wide range of programmes. These carefully curated presentations complement Esplanade’s own diverse offerings for audiences. Esplanade works in close partnership with local, regional and international artists to develop artistic capabilities, push artistic boundaries and engage audiences. The centre supports the creation of artistic content and develops technical capabilities for the industry nationally. Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is operated by The Esplanade Co Ltd, which is a not-for-profit organisation, a registered Charity and an Institution of a Public Character.

In conjunction with Esplanade's da:ns focus – Connect Asia Now (CAN) which took place earlier this October, we hosted 30 international presenters, festival directors, producers and artists as part of our International Presenters Programme (IPVP). In its second edition, IPVP is in collaboration with the National Arts Council. Throughout this weekend, our international guests learnt more about the Singapore performing arts landscape and our connections to Asia, through CAN performances and exchanges with artists, practitioners and producers from Singapore and the region. We look forward to the future partnerships and collaborations that may blossom from their visit!

It’s gonna get loud this weekend! 🔥 It is with immense gratitude and excitement that we welcome you to the 23rd edition of Baybeats, presented by Esplanade, from 11 – 13 Oct 2024. As Singapore’s largest free alternative music festival, the success of Baybeats is built upon years of strong support from our independent music scene. These include those who have grown with the festival since day one and now share the experience with their families, and those who continually push the boundaries of the scene, as well as all our newly acquainted Budding Bands and fans, whom we welcome to the Baybeats Family. Each year, Baybeats works hard to bring together a diverse mix of alternative artists, both local and international. We’re dedicated to creating a space where emerging and established artists share the same stage, where boundaries fade, and where what truly matters is the renewed passion for music and the moments we create together. While the festival continues to grow as a platform for alternative music in Singapore, this scene still struggles to find a larger space locally where music can be expressed and experienced freely. With limited performance spaces and the scale of the local music market, artists are constantly challenged to come up with innovative ways to push their craft forward. Kudos to the many bands who have taken on this challenge and succeeded in reaching a wider audience without compromising their identities. Baybeats continues to be the platform that celebrates the DIY (do-it-yourself) spirit of our independent music community, including collectives, labels, gig organisers as well as creatives. They are the ones who prop up Singapore’s immense talent pool of alternative artists. The scene is what it is today because of their efforts, and the future of what the scene could look like, lies in their hands too. We also want to highlight the vital role of our friends and collaborators from the region, who have become pillars of support for the festival. This year, we are privileged to partner with two esteemed regional festivals—the Jakarta Music Con from Indonesia and Emerge Music from Taiwan. These partnerships offer us the opportunities to showcase Singapore’s talents abroad and raise the festival’s international profile. This festival is made possible with the generous support of our Principal Sponsor, KEEN Baybeats 2024 is also supported by 4th Wall Studios and Showlite Systems. The heart and soul of the festival does not just lie within the line-up—it exists in the community that we've built together, the stories we share and the passion put in every note. Baybeats only thrives because of everyone’s unwavering support and belief in alternative music. Thank you once again, for making Baybeats a safe space where independent and alternative artists can truly shine. Hydhir Ramli Programmer https://lnkd.in/gv9P7RXv

21 is often considered a significant age—one that marks new beginnings, responsibilities and opportunities. For Esplanade, turning 21 meant refining and homing in on our core mission with renewed energy and vigour. We believe that the arts can enhance one's sense of wellbeing and connection to their communities, and we remain committed to creating a diversity of programmes while supporting the next generation. In FY2023, the centre saw more than 3.8 million attendances both in person and online for more than 4,200 activities. We also supported the creation of 294 new works and 778 Singapore artists in mentorship, development and residency opportunities! Our heartfelt thanks goes to all individuals, organisations and corporations for your support of Esplanade through the years! Some weeks back, I attended the Green Stages 2024 symposium where #theatre practitioners in #Singapore discussed how to be more #climate-conscious as an industry and what this might mean. There have been individual projects (like The Theatre Practice Ltd's activations bringing together food, theatre and recycling, or Drama Box's Project 12 eco-social residency and research on Pulau Ubin), and various organisations have environmentally-friendly practices (e.g. the rainwater and food waste collection and recycling from The Esplanade Co Ltd's building and mall). What would it take to act collectively? Through all the conversations, what struck me was the cost of such collective action, in a space-strapped country where few theatre companies have adequate storage for set and props, let alone the wherewithal to bring it all together, inventorise and share these materials. Writer and environmental activist Choo Yi Feng flips the question of value on its head in this searching, passionately argued essay. We need to rethink the value we place as a society on objects, time and, yes, art-making, before we can even begin to consider any kind of sustainable action. Thanks to The Theatre Practice, initiator of Green Stages 2024 (of which Esplanade is a proud collaborator) for bringing us all together in the room, and Yi Feng for writing this piece for Esplanade Offstage. Lots to think about as we work towards a Theatre Green Book and sustainable theatre framework for Singapore. Read here: https://lnkd.in/g_rr6hnt

What does it mean to surrender to gravity? Inspired by the experience of watching freeriding—the practice of riding down unpaved mountain faces on bikes, snowboards or skis—dancer and choreographer Hwa Wei-An translates these practices from open terrains onto the flat, safe space of the dance floor in pursuit of possibility, wonder, and joy. His exploration of this relationship between body and ground first began in 2018, with several iterations presented over the years. This includes a 2021 video installation at VECTOR#1 by Dance Nucleus, and a live work-in-progress presentation at da:ns festival 2022. The most recent iteration of this performance premiered on 30 Aug 2024 at KongsiKL, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and will make its way to Singapore this December. We're thrilled to have been part of Wei-An's artistic journey through the years, and invite you to witness this culmination of work on 7 & 8 Dec at Esplanade Theatre Studio, as part of da:ns focus – Out of Site. A Reason for Falling is commissioned by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, created with the collaboration of Dance Nucleus (Singapore), Rimbun Dahan (Malaysia), DansiT (Norway), and KongsiKL (Malaysia). 💜 Today marks the first day of International Week for Deaf People (IWDP) 2024! At Esplanade, we are committed to ensuring everyone feels welcome, continuously improving accessibility at our venues and programmes so that even more can enjoy the arts with us. This year, we have been progressively enhancing our indoor performing venues with assistive listening systems. Currently, hearing aid users with a Telecoil-enabled programme can benefit from this system at the Esplanade Recital Studio and Singtel Waterfront Theatre at Esplanade. To see which programmes have this accessibility feature, simply filter by "Access Needs" on the What's On tab on our website, or look for the👂 icon on our event listings!
