Singapore's Leading University Hospital | Shaping Medicine • Transforming Care

About us

The National University Hospital (NUH) is Singapore’s leading university hospital. While the hospital at Kent Ridge first received its patients on 24 June 1985, our legacy started from 1905, the date of the founding of what is today the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. NUH is the principal teaching hospital of the medical school. Our unique identity as a university hospital is a key attraction for healthcare professionals who aspire to do more than practise tertiary medical care. We offer an environment where research and teaching are an integral part of medicine, and continue to shape medicine and transform care for the community we care for. We are an academic medical centre with over 1,200 beds, serving more than one million patients a year with over 50 medical, surgical and dental specialties. NUH is the only public and not-for-profit hospital in Singapore to provide trusted care for adults, women and children under one roof, including the only paediatric kidney and liver transplant programme in the country. The NUH is a key member of the National University Health System (NUHS), one of three public healthcare clusters in Singapore. Visit our website at www.nuh.com.sg. • A landmark research led by clinicians and scientists from NUH and other institutions, resulted in a better understanding of the intricate mechanisms behind the spread of gastric cancer to the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdominal cavity. For gastric cancers, it is the most common site of metastasis, both before and after treatments. These new findings provide hope for gastric cancer patients, with more effective and targeted treatments. Earlier this week, our family faced a bit of a scare when my daughter, Jessleen was suddenly diagnosed with appendicitis. What made this worse was that she was in the midst of her #PSLE examination with a final paper to go the next morning. On Monday afternoon (30 Sept), after returning from her mother tongue paper, Jessleen began experiencing abdominal pain. Initially, we attributed the discomfort to exam anxiety. However, the pain rapidly became unbearable. We rushed her to the emergency room at National University Hospital (#NUH), where she was diagnosed with acute early appendicitis which required surgery. We were in a dilemma. Our priority as parents was to ensure that Jessleen is healthy and safe. If that meant having to skip her final paper, then so be it. However, Jessleen insisted on wanting to sit for the paper. This was past 8:00pm, so we weren’t confident that anything could be done for her to sit for the paper at 8:15am the very next morning. However, to our immense relief, her compassionate class teachers, Mdm Liza and Mr. Ang of St Anthony’s Primary School were incredibly supportive. The Ministry of Education (#MOE) / Singapore Examinations & Assessment Board (#SEAB) were contacted, and arrangements were made for invigilators to come to the hospital on Tuesday morning so my daughter could complete her exam. At the hospital, the doctors and nurses at NUH’s Ward 45 went above and beyond to accommodate our daughter's needs. They provided the necessary documentations, arranged for a special room and scheduled all other procedures around her exam provided Jessleen was well enough in the morning. On Tuesday morning (1 Oct), two MOE invigilators were at her bedside by 7:30am to ensure she was comfortable and ready to proceed. Despite the pain and being on IV antibiotics, Jessleen persevered and completed her paper before undergoing various scans and a surgery late that evening. Throughout her stay at the hospital, we were deeply touched by the care and compassion shown by NUH’s medical team. From the doctors and nurses to the support staff, everyone went out of their way to make her feel comfortable and safe. Thanks to their exceptional care, Jessleen was discharged on Friday morning (4 Oct), and is now back home in great spirits. Sunita and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof Dr. Mali and his extended team, Dr. Monica, Dr. Koh Zhong Jie, Dr. Irene Tu, Dr. Ayeesha, anesthesiologist Dr. Ashoka and his team, all the nurses at Ward 45, her principal Mrs Choo, teachers Mdm Liza Mr. Ang & Ms. Tan Shu Tian, St Anthony's Primary School, and the Ministry of Education. Your empathy, kindness and support in our moment of need will never be forgotten! We are truly grateful...

  • Prof Yap Hui Kim and Dr David Lu led the diagnosis and treatment of four-year old Siqing, who suffered from atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS). It is a rare condition that causes tiny blood clots to form in the body’s small blood vessels, with a global incidence figure between 0.23 to 1.9 per million population annually. While there is no known cure, aHUS can be treated by plasmapheresis, where the patient’s plasma is removed and replaced with a donor’s healthy plasma. Thankfully, Siqing’s overall condition improved after the treatment. Now ten years old, Siqing leads a fulfilling life. • We are proud of our six nurses (first row) who are among the first batch of 33 nurses enrolled in ITE’s Work-Study Diploma (WSDip) in Nursing, designed to upgrade enrolled nurses to registered nurses. This course will pave the way for nurses to take on greater responsibilities as registered nurses and better prepare them to provide enhanced care to their patients. Seven years ago, Mr Chan was told that he had only a year left to live. His only hope was a liver transplant. Thankfully, his daughter was a match and made the courageous decision to donate part of her liver to give her father a new lease of life. Under the meticulous care of the multidisciplinary team at the National University Centre for Organ Transplantation (NUCOT), Mr Chan successfully underwent a liver transplant and both father and daughter went home well less than two weeks after surgery. We are happy to see that Mr Chan and his daughter continue to lead active lives today. Watch this video to hear from Mr Chan. — NUCOT is Singapore's leading organ transplant centre and the only specialist centre for both adult and paediatric organ transplantation. • Safety Education starts from educating young minds! The National University Centre for Trauma was at Fairfield Methodist School (Primary) recently to engage over 200 students. Through the interactive session, the students learnt essential tips on road and escalator safety, and first aid basics for common injuries. Drs Ivy Ang and Eileen Oh from the Children’s Emergency also shared real-life cases to highlight the importance of being aware of their surroundings. Interested to have our team at your outreach events? Get in touch via nucet@nuhs.edu.sg. #NationalUniversityCentreforTrauma #RoadSafety #InjuryPrevention — Dr Ivy Ang is a Consultant and Dr Eileen Oh is an Associate Consultant from the Department of Paediatrics, Khoo Teck Puat - National University Children’s Medical Institute (KTP-NUCMI).
