Innovation is a key driver in achieving Singapore’s “30 by 30” goal—producing 30% of our nutritional needs locally by 2030, as part of the Singapore Food Story. Research institutions, universities, and companies are intensifying efforts to develop nutritious solutions🥗 that reduce the environmental impact of #food production. One such innovator is dsm-firmenich, a Swiss-Dutch leader in nutrition, health, and beauty. Their dedicated R&D hub for plant-based food in Singapore is working to create healthier, sustainable food products by harnessing local expertise in food technology, sensory science, flavour chemistry, and product design. Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of National Research Foundation Singapore, Mr Heng Swee Keat, recently visited dsm-firmenich and saw how these innovations are being translated into market-ready concepts. These include upcycled protein savoury snacks using canola, and protein analogues designed for regional tastes. A standout example is their salted egg CulinaPlant Chunks, a plant-based protein that mimics the taste and texture of real meat. Beyond food innovation, dsm-firmenich is also leading in fragrance technology. DPM Heng was introduced to sustainable fragrances crafted by Singaporean master perfumer Martin Koh, using eco-friendly materials and advanced bioconversion techniques. These efforts are part of the #NRFsg Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) 2025 plan, which supports Singapore’s “30 by 30” goal by developing the capability and capacity of the local agri-food industry to grow local and increase our nation’s resilience 💪 to supply disruptions. #RIE2025 #Innovation #Sustainability #FoodTech #FragranceTech #TalentDevelopment

Your shoe could be the key to improving workplace safety in the future. Professor Chwee Teck (C.T.) Lim from iHealthtech, National University of Singapore and the Mechanobiology Institute together with NUS College of Design & Engineering's Department of Biomedical Engineering collaborated with FlexoSense, an NUS startup led by CEO Lye-peng C. and Mark Francis De Leon to develop smart insoles with sensors that track foot pressure and movement to reduce slips, trips and falls in the workplace. Real-time data collected provide immediate hazards alerts and offer insights to potential accident zones at workplaces by monitoring foot pressure exerted by workers to keep their balance and change motion when performing tasks. A trial in the maritime sector has already been done, with another pilot for the F&B sector coming up soon. Read more about FlexoSense smart insole in the comments.

Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the National Research Foundation Singapore Mr Heng Swee Keat recently visited TCOMS - Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore a national R&D centre dedicated to the Marine & Offshore Engineering, Maritime and other Ocean sectors. A core feature of TCOMS is its next-generation Deepwater Ocean Basin facility which has the capabilities to simulate physical ocean environment and complex scenarios that offshore platforms, ships and underwater systems operate in. The cyber-physical (CP) modelling and simulation technology that TCOMS is developing, would be key in supporting the industry as it transforms under Singapore’s maritime decarbonisation plan. Companies can stress test and validate designs of floating wind turbines, electric harbour crafts and bunkering of clean fuels such as methanol and ammonia in offshore conditions at the facility. The centre which brings together researchers from the public sector, academia and industry, also serves as a platform to address Singapore’s competitive needs and readiness in maritime security, maritime and port infrastructure, and the effects of climate change such as coastal protection. TCOMS’ efforts are part of National Research Foundation Singapore’s RIE2025 plans to strengthen Singapore as a global hub with the expertise and talent to create, build and manage future ocean systems and solutions. It is a joint venture between A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research and the National University of Singapore, and is supported by Enterprise Singapore and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
