Do you know what happens to SMRT train cabins after they’re decommissioned? Well, City Developments Limited has the answer! 🚆🌱 Singapore’s first repurposed SMRT train cabin is now the CDL EcoTrain—a solar-powered sustainability education hub packed with interactive exhibits and hands-on workshops, spearheaded by Esther An from CDL Sustainability and Man Jing Kong 江曼菁 of Just Keep Thinking. And right next to it? The CDL MicroForest, a lush regenerative forest in the heart of a mall, created with NUS experts to combat urban heat and restore biodiversity with thanks to Veera Sekaran. I had the privilege of meeting President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Mr. Sherman Kwek, CEO of CDL, and it was such a delight to witness their camaraderie and sense of humor. President Tharman even gave the little tree-planting helpers an unexpected shower of blessings with the watering can—such a heartwarming moment! 🌿💧 It was also such a joy to catch up with the amazingly dedicated and united team at CDL—Mr. Chia Ngiang Hong, Eik Sheng Kwek, Allen Ang, BBM, Rena Tan and Marilyn Cheong. What an incredible event and an inspiring step forward for sustainability. Vincent and I had the privilege of hosting an evening of inspiration and connection, welcoming distinguished leaders from companies with a heart for the community—Sze Yeng Lee from KPMG Singapore, Gregory Seow and Darren Tan from Maybank, Choong Luen Lien from Gojek, Stephen Wang from Tencent Singapore, Sui Ling Cheah, and Annie Gan from CDL Hospitality Trusts. The generous support from our corporate donors at the Sustainable Christmas Market raised an incredible $398,000, directly impacting the lives of underprivileged children from one-room flats and challenging family backgrounds in the Singapore Red Cross Young Hearts Programme. Together, we are giving these children opportunities beyond their reach and changing lives one child at a time. Sharing my home-cooked meal and engaging in thoughtful conversation, all while celebrating the warmth and camaraderie of Chinese New Year, truly made for an unforgettable night. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of joining Go Green SG’s Partner Engagement—an invitation from the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, Singapore that left me excited. Over six weeks (from mid-May to the end of June 2025), Singapore is set to buzz with environmental sustainability activities under the SG60 theme. What struck me is the opportunity for partners to tap into the $50 million SG Eco Fund. If you’re dreaming of launching or scaling a sustainability project, now’s the time. In celebration of SG60, the fund has upped the maximum grant for the Sprout category from $8,000 to $30,000 for projects submitted in 2025—a move that truly empowers innovative ideas. MSE shared a few insights from Go Green SG 2024 that I felt are really useful: • 47% of participants were drawn by good deals (special offers, promo codes) • 44% valued convenient, accessible locations • 40% appreciated well-timed activities It’s refreshing to see our community converge with purpose. Our first volunteering session with Young Hearts Singapore Red Cross in 2025 was a beautiful start to the year! We painted, we laughed, we connected—and it was all thanks to amazing volunteers who made it happen. Chin Weishan and her 3 little ones inspired everyone with sensorial art activities that expanded the horizons of our Young Hearts. 10 year old Fleur Yeo captivated with meaningful fables, weaving lessons and values into her storytelling. And Jacqueline Ng, Shin Khaw, Jamie and friends from Hwa Chong International School, brought yummy pizza, plus their time and energy to support the activities and share in the joy! It’s moments like these that remind us why we keep engaging the community and Young Hearts all year long with Peace of Art SG and SustainableMarkets.SG Ready to join in? 20,000 attendees yet Carbon Neutral 🌱 How we did it… On 16-17 November 2024, the Sustainable Christmas Market gathered over 20,000 attendees at South Beach, promoting sustainable practices with families and vendors selling handmade, eco-friendly items, while fundraising for underprivileged children. With Climate Asia Pte Ltd’s expertise, Green Is The New Black’s sustainability consulting, and the support of the SCM2024 community, we’re proud to have achieved carbon-neutral status for the event! 🌿 What Does Carbon Neutral Mean?… By reducing emissions and offsetting the remainder through certified carbon offset projects. In the case of SCM2024, we purchased and retired 2 Carbon Credits utilised in a Wind Energy Project in India to achieved net-zero emissions for SCM2024. 📊 Key Emission Sources:  1️⃣ Electrical consumption  2️⃣ Transportation  3️⃣ Waste generated Principles for Carbon Accounting: SCM2024 adhered to the key principles of transparency, accuracy, and completeness to ensure reliable carbon accounting. Here are some simple and meaningful tips I shared to celebrate the season in a greener way: 🎁 Play the Presents Game: Skip the endless gifts and try games like Secret Santa or Dirty Santa instead. These are all about having fun together, focusing on the laughter and memories rather than the gifts. Dirty Santa even adds a cheeky twist—you get to "steal" someone else’s gift! 🛍️ Shop Local: Support local makers and businesses. It’s a great way to grow Singapore's creative community while cutting down on shipping. Some of my favourite treasures come from homegrown brands like MamaShop for personalised gifts and ANS.EIN for apparel. 🌱 Rethink the Menu: Add more plant-based dishes to your Christmas spread. Eating less meat is an easy way to be kinder to the planet—check out abillion for inspiration.
