Safe Food for all
About us
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) was formed as a statutory board under the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) to oversee food safety and food security from farm-to-fork. The SFA brings together food-related functions carried out by the former Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore, the National Environment Agency and the Health Sciences Authority. As the lead agency for food-related matters, SFA’s mission is to ensure and secure a supply of safe food for Singapore. SFA works hand-in-hand with the industry and consumers to grow our three “food baskets” – Diversify import sources, Grow local, and Grow overseas, as well as ensure food safety from farm to fork. SFA also partners food businesses to strengthen capabilities, tap on technologies to raise productivity, undertake research to develop new lines of business, and catalyse industry transformation to ensure food security. Singapore Food Agency reposted this
I can say so much about the Singapore Cooperation Programme training in Assuring Food Safety and Security by the Singapore Food Agency and the Singapore Cooperation Enterprise I attended last week, but this would mean a relatively long post so I’ll just say that it was an amazing one-of-a-kind experience made possible by the incredible planning, preparation, and delivery of the course itself and the excellent standards, and the benefits of meeting and interacting with participants from countries with wildly different realities and food security challenges - among the participants were public officials from Kuwait, Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Samoa, Malaysia, Macedonia, Serbia, and Malawi. So many lessons to be brought back home and applied, but two major takeaways: 1. The great benefit of having a single authority with full ownership and responsibility for food safety and security. In Singapore’s case this integration happened in 2019. 2. The massive importance of having robust systems for food safety and security underpinned by enforcement. I was impressed by how food safety is at the core of Singapore’s national interests even though it conflicts with general food security, this in a country that imports > 90% of its food supply. In the pyramid of priorities, safety first. Special thanks to Melin Lim and Eric Lee and Lai Kim Tan-Low and all colleagues. #foodsafey #foodsecurity
