On 12 December 1970, the then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew (second from right) attended a Visitor's Dinner in the Gilmour Room (then the Gilmour Grill). That same evening, he accepted the honorary title of Visitor to the Club. SCC President (1973 - 1975) Tom Eames Hughes can be seen addressing Mr Lee here. Also present are 1976-1978 President T.S. Sinnathuray (to the right of Eames Hughes) and 1978-1980 President Neill Aitken (to the right of Mr. Lee). Check out the commemorative display of this momentous event at the Main Lounge.

As a premier sports club, one of our aims include helping to develop local and regional sports by providing avenues for competitive play, the exchange of skills and knowledge, as well as cultivating interest in sports and nuturing young budding talents. When Darren and his family moved to Singapore in 2022, he signed his son, Alex, up for our Hockey SCChool as he believed it would be a great place for Alex to continue developing his love for the sport and pick up important life skills. To read more about Darren's story, browse the latest issue of The Padang Magazine here: https://lnkd.in/g9Uh4DYs

Our Assistant Restaurant Manager at The Padang Restaurant, Charlie, shares with us about a unique tradition that her family observes every Lunar New Year: “Every CNY, I enjoy helping my dad prepare for our reunion dinner. He is a really good cook and helping him isn’t an easy task. Family time is precious for me as I live and work in a different country, so going back for reunion dinner is a must; it’s one of the few times I get to see my whole extended family. A unique tradition that my family upholds during CNY is ‘zham cha’; where we serve tea to our parents and elders on the morning of the first day of CNY. At the same time, we greet them with well-wishes and blessings for the year ahead and give them ‘red packets’; in return we also receive our own. As I am the youngest, I’m the last in line to ‘zham cha’ and by that point my siblings have used up all the greetings that I can think of, so every year I have to do some creative thinking to ensure that I come up with something new!”

Our IT Assistant Manager, Teck Ho shares what are some of the traditions and activities that he's excited to introduce his infant daughter to during the Lunar New Year: “My favourite part of CNY is my family reunion. It’s the one time during the year we can all gather and see each other in person. Coming from East Malaysia, lion dances were the highlight of the celebration as the troupe visited home; bringing excitement and blessings. It’s quite different to Singapore where you must make a reservation for them to visit. When I married my wife, a unique tradition that her family observes is presenting her parents with ‘ang pow’ and blessing them for the year ahead while kneeling before them. It’s such a beautiful way to show respect and strengthen family ties. Now that I have a daughter, I’m excited to introduce her to the sights and sounds of CNY. She currently enjoys watching and observing her surroundings, so I’ll involve her in the festivities by getting her to ‘help’ decorate the house and see me bake potato cookies and pineapple tarts. I’ll also teach her simple gestures for greeting people, like putting her hands together to wish guests ‘Gong Xi, Gong Xi’. I can’t wait to see her reaction to the lion dance performances; it’s something I know she’ll love watching. For the coming year, I hope we can all be healthy, happy and have some good luck come our way.”
