🎂 We are one! ☝️ It has been a year since the official grand opening of The GEAR: Kajima Lab for Global Engineering, Architecture & Real Estate, and what an incredible journey it has been! 🎉 In just one year, The GEAR has become more than just a building—it’s a vibrant hub for the built environment sector. We would like to thank all of Kajima’s staff and industry friends who joined us at our anniversary celebrations yesterday. The event gave us the opportunity to present our achievements from new R&D by KaTRIS, to fostering collaboration with the built environment community, to receiving several accolades for the work we’ve done. Attendees also got to hear about our vision for the future and explore some of the building’s coolest, previously off-limits spaces. ✨ And the excitement doesn’t stop here! Last month, members of the KaTRIS Smart Building and HBEI teams hosted “The GEAR Smart Wellbeing Building” workshop with guests from Cluster, Inc., the SMU School of Computing and Information Systems, designFreak, and Panasonic R&D Center Singapore. 🌟🏢 The workshop explored the use of smart technologies for enhancing the wellbeing of occupants, a crucial element of the user experience within the building. Some of the main themes included how IoT, Immersive Technologies and architectural design could be utilised to facilitate occupants’ wellbeing in a smarter manner. For instance, The GEAR could serve as a test bed for a metaverse developed by Cluster, Inc., fostering exploration and learning about various facets of the building. SMU School of Computing and Information Systems’ innovative robots designed for human interaction and learning could enhance occupant safety and convenience. Additionally, leveraging designFreak’s architectural expertise could optimise workspace design and layout to promote occupants’ wellbeing. 🙌 Supporting emerging leaders in the built environment 🏗️🧱 We were delighted to welcome participants from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD)-Building and Construction Authority Design Thinking Workshop at The GEAR for the second year! These emerging leaders in the built environment sector were selected to be part of the iBuildSG LEAD Horizon Programme to grow into their leadership potential. During the four-day Design Innovation workshop led by DesignZ, SUTD’s design centre, participants immersed themselves in intensive sessions, collaborating to identify opportunity areas to key challenges in the #BuiltEnvironment. Their solutions were culminated at the final pitch presentations at The GEAR. 💡 Participants also toured our facilities and engaged in a fireside chat with Luke Wu, Head of Innovation at Kajima Development, gaining valuable insights into the organisational perspective of innovation. Startups from our Residency Programme — Spinoff Robotics, ConcreteAI, Hephaestus Technologies Pte. Ltd (Htech), and Civils.ai — also shared about their experiences in navigating the ambiguity in innovation. Their real-world insights inspired workshop teams to bring innovative ideas to life, whether it’s within their own organisations or entrepreneurial ventures. Can mixed-mode (AC - NV) ventilation be effectively practiced in tropical climates? At Indoor Air 2024, our team (Adrian Chong, Tham Kwok Wai, Claire Y., Thomas Parkinson, Richard de Dear AM,and myself) hosted a technical workshop discussing the potential and real-world implementation of mixed-mode ventilation in Singapore. I had the opportunity to share insights on the subjective performance of a semi-outdoor workspace, #KPark, at The GEAR . An open mindset is crucial. A comfortable workspace in Singapore doesn't always need to be air-conditioned.
