Thailand Hosts AOSWA 2024, Bolstering Space Weather Research and Global Collaboration Thailand has been an AOSWA member since 2010 and is honored to host the 7th Asia-Oceania Space Weather Alliance Workshop (AOSWA) from 8-11 October 2024, at Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel. The aims of the workshop is to bring together leading space weather researchers, Space Weather centers, and research institutions from across the Asia-Oceania region and to develop a robust system for monitoring and analyzing space weather, particularly for forecasting and issuing warnings about phenomena that could impact satellites, communications, and critical infrastructure. The conference provided an opportunity for participants to explore new tools for studying space weather, including observation, theory development, modeling, forecasting, and applications. The workshop covered 8 key topics: 1) Thermosphere, Ionosphere, and Magnetosphere Dynamics and Interactions; 2) Monitoring and Simulation of Solar Activity and Space Radiation; 3) Connecting Local Observation to Global Network and Space Weather Services; 4) Space Weather Awareness and Public Outreach; 5) AI and New Techniques of Space Weather Forecasting; 6) CGMS Efforts to Improve User Access to Operational Space Weather Data; 7)General Topics on Space Weather; and 8) Space Weather Impact and Mitigation. Thailand has consistently prioritized space weather research, recognizing its direct impact on the safety of satellites, communication systems, and navigation systems. Thailand strive to expand regional cooperation, enhance its domestic space weather forecasting capabilities, and elevate the contributions of its researchers and government agencies to global platforms.

Thailand’s space experiment project by Mahidol University and GISTDA jointly participated in a space biology experiment under microgravity and cosmic rays on Shijian-19 mission (Recoverable Satellite) of China under the Lancang-Mekong cooperation framework. Faculty of Science, Mahidol University of Thailand, led by Dr. Tatpong Tulyananda, a faculty member and PI of Plant Biology & Astrobotany Laboratory (PBA lab), has been jointly implementing the project titled “Multi-omics analysis of Germinating Rice Seedlings Under Extreme Environmental Conditions”, with GISTDA team, a space agency of Thailand under Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI). The project is selected to participate in the Shijian-19 mission, which is the newest reusable research satellite by China National Space Administration (CNSA). The Shijian-19 (SJ-19), including the Thai research payload, was successfully launched into space with the Long March 2D rocket from Jiuquan launch pad on Friday, September 27, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. The payload of Thailand team was successfully launched to outer space with the tremendous supports from Thai and Chinese strategic partners: CNSA/Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China/the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST)/ Beihang University/Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO)/Lancang Mekong Cooperation Framework/MHESI/Department of East Asian Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Thailand/the Royal Thai Embassy in Beijing/Rice Department of Thailand/ and Program Management Unit for Human Resources & Institutional Development, Research and Innovation (PMU-B). Next step, Mahidol University and GISTDA will conduct an experiment on the response and adaptation of rice seedlings, which are the returned samples, for accomplishing the goals of the project.
