Despite having a rich history in divergent sexualities and gender identities, trans life in Cambodia can be complicated. Trans-affirming healthcare is neither legal nor illegal, but is completely undiscussed in law. As a result, trans-affirming healthcare is largely undeveloped, and can be largely improved. "She went to file a complaint, but got her feelings invalidated, got misgendered, and it triggered her dysphoria." Aisia Castelo, RPm recounts a trans friend's experiences filing a complaint after getting sexually harrased on a train. Trans people deserve to have basic protections while living in a society, instead of being brushed off and invalidated just because of who they are. The Trans Thrive Project is a initiative by APTN to collect stories of transphobic incidents in order to understand and fight transphobia. In the beginning of August, APTN held a trans-inclusive healthcare workshop with our partners Blue Diamond Society over at Nepal! This workshop is one of the signature capacity building activities from APTN that was already done in several countries where we explored our #TowardsTransformativeHealthcare module, gender affirmative healthcare, creating inclusive environments for trans and gender non-conforming patients, and overall training healthcare providers to better serve transgender patients. Over the past few weeks, women athletes of color in #Olympics2024 have been at the forefront of a massive social media harassment campaign led by TERFs and right wing anti-gender actors from all across the internet. Gender essentialism and "Transvestigations" have been weapons utilized by anti-gender actors to spread fear and hate about transgender and gender nonconforming people, and these cases are evidences that it doesn't only harm transgender people, but cis and intersex people as well.
