AIADMK opposes Formula 4 racing in Chennai

AIADMK opposed the use of taxpayer money for the scheduled Formula 4 race in Chennai, claiming it primarily served private interests under the guise of a sports event. They argued that public funds should not unfairly benefit certain individuals or companies, citing potential traffic and noise issues, especially near hospitals. Sports Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin refuted these allegations, stating that the event had more sponsors than expected. The party stressed that using public funds for this private event goes against Article 14 of the Constitution, emphasizing the need for fair and transparent use of public money.

CHENNAI: AIADMK has raised objections regarding the scheduled Formula 4 racing in Chennai, arguing that taxpayer money should not be used to benefit a few individuals or companies.
In a petition submitted to chief secretary Shiv Das Meena on Tuesday, the party’s advocates’ wing secretary, I S Inbadurai said the proposed race was more of an entertainment event than a sporting activity.

He said that public funds should not be used to unjustly enrich certain individuals or companies under the pretext of organising a sporting event.
“The usage of public funds to conduct an event in collaboration with a private individual/company seems outrightly discriminatory and against the basic tenets of Article 14 of the Constitution,” he said.
Meanwhile, sports minister Udhayanidhi Stalin refuted allegations of opposition parties that sponsors were forced to fund the racing event. “In fact, we have more sponsors than expected,” Udhayanidhi said. The 3.7km racing track is planned to run along major roads that connect various hotspots in Chennai, and restriction of traffic would cause immense pain to people, Inbadurai said. The route includes several hospitals, and the noise from the race cars could affect patients, he added.
