Cyclone Fengal Highlights: Puducherry declares holiday for schools, colleges amid heavy rain

Cyclone Fengal made landfall near Puducherry, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported. Coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of Andhra Pradesh are witnessing heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The IMD stated that the cyclone, located over the southwest Bay of Bengal, is moving west-northwestward at 7 km/h. As of 11:30 PM on November 29, it was approximately 210 km southeast of Chennai and 210 km east of Puducherry. Wind speeds of 70-80 km/h, gusting to 90 km/h, are expected during landfall.

Authorities have issued warnings for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining Andhra Pradesh districts, including Nellore, Tirupati, and Chittoor. Coastal regions have already reported rainfall and wind speeds reaching 70 km/h.

Chief minister M K Stalin will visit the cyclone-hit areas in Villupuram district on Monday. The Villupuram district received an average rainfall of 49.29cm of rain in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30am on Sunday. Mailam in the district received the maximum rainfall of 50cm in the state.

Stalin will visit the cyclone shelter at Manthavaipudukuppam village in Marakanam union in the district and interact with the people, who were rescued from low lying areas and accommodated there. He will also visit the Vikravandi RDO’s office and review the relief and rehabilitation measures undertaken so far.

Cyclone Fengal: CM Stalin inspects relief work

Amid heavy downpours and widespread flooding caused by cyclonic storm Fengal, Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin visited the State Emergency Operation Centre on Sunday to review the ongoing relief operations.

During his visit, Stalin called on the Union government to send a central team to assess the situation and evaluate the crop damage caused by the cyclone.

The Chief Minister also toured several areas in the Kolathur assembly constituency, accompanied by Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran and other officials from the disaster management department.

Stalin shared that nearly 27,000 people have received food packets from Amma canteens since Saturday, as part of the relief efforts. He also noted that 21 of Chennai's 23 subways have been successfully cleared of waterlogging.

Cyclone Fengal's heavy rains caused waterlogging on major arterial roads, disrupting traffic and confining vehicles to service lanes for most of Saturday.

Key stretches, including Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), Mount-Poonamallee High Road, Jawaharlal Nehru Road, and Anna Salai near Guindy, were cleared using pumps deployed by various government agencies such as the State Highways Department, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), and Chennai Metro Rail Limited.

Cyclonic Storm Fengal crossed the North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts early Sunday morning and is expected to weaken into a deep depression within the next few hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD reported that the cyclone made landfall near Puducherry between 10.30pm and 11.30pm IST on Saturday, with wind speeds ranging from 70-80 kmph and gusts reaching up to 90 kmph.

"The Cyclonic Storm FENGAL crossed North Tamil Nadu & Puducherry coasts near latitude 12.05°N and longitude 79.9°E, close to Puducherry, between 2230 hrs IST and 2330 hrs IST yesterday, the 30th November as a cyclonic storm with wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph. It lay centred at 2330 hours IST yesterday, the 30th of November over north coastal Tamilnadu & Puducherry near latitude 12.0°N and longitude 79.8°E, close to Puducherry. It will continue to move west-southwestwards slowly and weaken gradually into a deep depression during the next 3 hours," IMD wrote on X.

Cyclone Fengal Live: Minister directs Tangedco to suspend power supply if needed

Electricity, prohibition and excise minister V Senthilbalaji instructed Tangedco officials to suspend electricity supply, if required, in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, Villupuram and Cuddalore districts.


The minister mentioned that special teams were formed and these teams are to be ready with equipment and machinery to attend to complaints to restore power supply at the earliest. Senthilbalaji also instructed Tangedco personnel to work in full safety gear.

The deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, located about 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee, is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours, as per the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

It will move north-northwestwards, skirting the Sri Lanka coast, and is forecasted to cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts near Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on the morning of November 30, with wind speeds of 50-60 km/h gusting to 70 km/h.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are bracing for heavy rain as Cyclone Fengal approaches. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is conducting risk assessments and safety checks in vulnerable areas like T R Patinam and Karaikal.
