About us
The African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) is a groundbreaking coalition of 49 African Heads of State and Government working across country and regional borders to achieve near-zero malaria deaths in Africa by the end of 2030. We are leveraging our collective knowledge and influence to bring about action and accountability as we fight one of the continent’s most devastating diseases by: • Providing a forum to review progress and address challenges in meeting the malaria targets; • Implementing a monitoring and accountability system through the ALMA Scorecard for Accountability and Action to track results, identify bottlenecks, and facilitate appropriate action; and • Identifying and sharing lessons learned for effective implementation of national programs. A 12-member Ethiopian delegation from the Ministry of Health's Reform Executive Office recently completed an experience-sharing mission in Ghana. Organised by the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), the visit facilitated the exchange of best practices in implementing the Community Scorecard (CSC), which is successfully in use in both countries. From Ghana’s integration of the CSC into health programs, enhancing community participation in health service delivery, to Ethiopia’s community-driven procurement of ambulances, the mission showcased the community scorecard's impact in different parts of the continent and provided valuable insights for adaptation. Community members play a key role in strengthening #health systems. The Community Scorecard (CSC), which the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) supports member states in implementing, provides a platform to facilitate this, enabling community members to actively participate in improving health service delivery through open dialogue. In Kenya, where the Community Scorecard has been rolled out in over 14 counties, its impact is evident. For example, in Kakamega County, community dialogues facilitated by the CSC led to improvements in bathroom and lavatory facilities at the maternity wing of Matungu Sub-County Hospital. This resulted in enhanced service delivery for expectant mothers and an increase in hospital births—a powerful reminder of how community engagement can improve the quality of care.
