About us

Twiga Cement was established by Cementia Holdings AG of Switzerland in 1959. In 1962, Cementia Holdings AG in collaboration with Tanganyika Development Company (now Tanzania Development Corporation) started to build the cement factory at Wazo Hill in Dar es Salaam. The Government of Tanzania owned 20% of the company shares. Construction of the factory was completed in mid 1966 and the first bag of cement produced in Tanzania came out of the factory at Wazo Hill.

At Twiga Cement, we believe that leadership and interpersonal skills are key to fostering collaboration, enhancing productivity, and driving innovation across teams. Over the past 18 months, we proudly completed 13 modules as part of our first-ever Twiga Training Track (TTT), designed for managers across various departments. This inaugural class included 15 talented individuals from our succession plan, preparing them to take on future leadership roles. One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey was the opportunity to exchange knowledge and insights across a wide range of topics, including managing change, delivering charismatic presentations, providing effective feedback, and setting #SMART objectives. These sessions not only developed crucial skills but also built a culture of learning and growth within the company. We concluded this transformative experience with a memorable award ceremony, where the participants were honored with certificates of achievement presented by Dr. Dominik von Achten, CEO of Heidelberg Materials. It was a proud moment for Twiga Cement, marking the beginning of many more leadership development initiatives to come.

The best salesperson is a well-prepared salesperson. (Otto Poulsen, MD Heidelberg Materials Betong Norge) Hi, I’m Nelda MENSAH! I began my career journey as customer account manager, then I joined CIMTOGO Officiel in 2018, and now I’m sales manager. In my position as sales manager, we focus on providing a smooth customer experience by being available and responsive to their needs. We ensure our products are always of high quality, and our goal is to combine great service with reliable products. As a sales team without the right tools, we’ve faced challenges like scattered customer data, limited insights, missed opportunities, inefficient processes, and inconsistent customer interactions. In collaboration with Ghacem LTD, CIMTOGO Officiel, and Twiga Cement—all part of the Heidelberg Materials —we’ve developed a powerful solution: CRM – Sales@EM. This tool, born from the collective efforts of our African plants, was recently launched in Tanzania, following successful rollouts in Ghana and Togo. Thanks to the teamwork, support, and shared experiences of the Tanzania team, the launch was a success. I’m proud to have been part of this journey. CRM is more than just a tool—it’s a game-changer. It empowers sales teams, enhances customer interactions, and provides valuable insights, ensuring seamless collaboration and improved efficiency across the board. Outside of work, I love travelling. Recently, I had the chance to visit some of Tanzania’s national parks, including Saadan, which was an incredible experience.

I’m Anton Kollmann, and I’ve been with Heidelberg Materials since June 1999. Currently, I serve as the Head of Process Excellence & Decarbonization for CCC AMWA. My journey has taken me through various cement plants in Germany, Gabon, Russia, and France, culminating in my role as Plant Manager in Beaucaire, France, until May 2023. Before stepping into my current position in April, I focused on CCUS projects as a Process Expert. Last August marked my first visit to the beautiful and welcoming country of Tanzania. From my arrival to departure, I was met with nothing but positive experiences! My mission was to assess the Twiga Cement and SIMBA CEMENT from both a technical and organizational perspective. Engaging with plant and country management, we explored how CCC can further support their journey towards enhanced performance and operational excellence through the STEAM initiative: Striving for Talent Excellence And Manufacturing. During my visit, I encountered passionate, skilled, and open-minded individuals. I witnessed impressive practices, such as clay addition to the clinker cooler at Wazo Hill, which stands out as a leader within our company. While there are areas for improvement, the foundation for growth is strong. The discussions were constructive, and I’m confident that the plants will continue to enhance their operational efficiency and thrive in the future. I’ll cherish the positive memories of Tanzania and its people, and I look forward to returning! #madebytwigacement #Sustainability #OperationalExcellence #Tanzania

During his visit to Tanzania, Dr. Dominik von Achten, the CEO of Heidelberg Materials, had the privilege of meeting 13-year-old Sharon Ringo, the founder of Sharon Ringo Foundation. Sharon is a passionate climate activist with an ambitious mission to plant 10 million trees across the East African Community within five years. In just one year, the Sharon Ringo Foundation and Twiga Cement have planted over 50,000 trees!   Sharon delivered a powerful message during the meeting, emphasizing that, children and youth will inherit this world—whether it thrives with life or struggles under the weight of our neglect. She reminded us of our shared responsibility to build a future where nature flourishes and generations live in harmony with mother earth. A future where, decades from now, we can proudly say #wemadeitpossible   In a symbolic gesture, Sharon signed a copy of her book titled "#TheBigFive" and presented it to Dr Dominik von Achten, marking the moment as a powerful reminder of the vital role young people play in the fight against climate change.
