Improving the wellbeing of communities in Zanzibar starting at the beginning of life.

About us

WAJAMAMA, a women-led NGO, was founded to address these challenges. Our mission is to improve maternal and child health outcomes by making integrated healthcare services accessible to women and children in economically-marginalized communities. We work with the understanding that achieving a future of equal opportunities depends on transforming the narratives surrounding reproductive health, pregnancy, and childbirth outcomes that continue to disadvantage Sub-Saharan Africans. Our programming focuses on improving the holistic health of communities while equipping health care providers with knowledge and tools to provide dignified, respectful, and evidence-based care for all. This multi prong approach ensures maternal health equity and maximizes the chances that Zanzibari children have access to healthy and beautiful beginnings, and thus a more prosperous future.

As we continue our Women’s History Month series, we’re shifting the lens to the trailblazers - women and men - who are redefining what’s possible for communities, especially for girls and women. Their work isn’t just impactful; it’s transformational. 🦽 Florence Namaganda (Founder, MUKISA FOUNDATION) is creating life-changing support systems for children living with disabilities in Uganda. Through therapy, medical care, assistive devices, and psychosocial support, MUKISA FOUNDATION ensures that every child can live with purpose and dignity. 🌱  saing'orie sangau (Executive Director, Women's Agri-Enviro Vision) is unlocking economic and environmental resilience for Maasai women, challenging systemic barriers from within. 🛡 Maanda Ngoitiko (Executive Director, Pastoral Women's Council) has spent nearly three decades championing the rights of pastoralist women, proving that tradition and equity can not only coexist; but thrive. 💡 Maria Omare (Founder & Executive Director, The Action Foundation) is breaking down barriers for children with disabilities, ensuring that inclusion isn’t just an idea; it’s action. 👶🏾 Nafisa Jiddawi (Founder & CEO, WAJAMAMA Community Health) is transforming maternal and infant health in Zanzibar. Seeing preventable illnesses firsthand, she founded WAJAMAMA to prioritise the beginning of life. Through a group care model, they deliver clinical services, community support, and peer learning in marginalised communities. This work is about more than leadership titles; it’s about shifting power, driving systemic change, and building trust where it matters most. Who are the change makers in philanthropy that inspire you? Let’s highlight their impact; drop their names in the comments! ⬇️ 📌 Missed last week’s post? • 🤝🏿 “Knowledge shared is impact multiplied.” 🤝🏿 In February, we conducted a two-day training for 10 coaches from MIMA Zanzibar, an organization that empowers young people and women in Zanzibar through sports, leadership development, and community engagement. How we are strengthening community health:  🌟 WAJAMAMA facilitates local health leader training → Knowledge spreads → More women and girls access vital health education → Improved health outcomes for all. This training covered menstrual health and hygiene (MHH), nutrition, and mental health, aligning with our commitment to integrating disability and accessibility inclusion into our programs and training. Just like the mentorship and supervision we offer our WAJAMAMA facilitators, we will continue supporting MIMA coaches by providing additional guidance as they implement our new facilitated learning materials in their sessions. 📚 #WAJAMAMA #WAJAMAMAStrong #CommunityHealth #MenstrualHealth #GirlsHealth #WomensHealth #LocalLeaders #KnowledgeSharing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Missed our other updates during February? • Central to our vision at WAJAMAMA is continuous capacity-building not just for our program participants, but for our team as well. 💪🏿 We were so proud to see our very own Inaara Merani representing WAJAMAMA Community Health at The New Africa Fund Venture Philanthropy (VP) Grantee Workshop in Kigali, Rwanda last week! Continuous learning is the foundation of growth 📚 Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to attend The New Africa Fund Venture Philanthropy (VP) Grantee Workshop in Kigali, Rwanda. This enriching experience allowed me to collaborate with fellow NAF VP grantees while exploring the key principles of resource mobilization. The sessions covered vital topics such as local fundraising, financial management, grant writing, visibility strategies, networking, and fostering safe, inclusive environments by preventing sexual harassment, among others. 🙌🏽 One of the most memorable moments of the week was the final team dinner, where we celebrated our collective diversity by wearing traditional clothing. It was a beautiful reminder of how culture and diversity strengthen our individual journeys and the broader impact we each strive to make. ✨ A heartfelt thank you to the entire team at The New Africa Fund for organizing a beautiful week filled with knowledge-sharing, community-building, and mutual understanding. I am also deeply grateful to WAJAMAMA Community Health and Nafisa Jiddawi for their unwavering support and continually providing me with valuable opportunities for capacity-building and growth. 🌼 #WAJAMAMAStrong #NAF #VPGrantee #ContinuousGrowth #NGO #GrassrootsOrganizations #ChangeMaker

  • We are beyond THRILLED to announce that our Founder and CEO, Nafisa Jiddawi, has been accepted into the Segal Family Foundation African Visionary Fellowship (AVF)! 🌍 The AVF was created to challenge the status quo in development—where organizations led by expatriates historically grew twice as fast as those led by Africans, Segal Family Foundation started the AVF in 2017 to disrupt this paradigm and push local leaders to the forefront of development. 💪🏿 Alongside her cohort, over this two-year fellowship, Nafisa will have access to: ☘️ Capacity: peer support, cohort workshops, and 1:1 coaching ☘️ Community: connections with a community of donors and doers ☘️ Connection: a community of like-minded changemakers At WAJAMAMA Community Health, we couldn't be more proud! Nafisa's leadership and vision continue to propel our mission forward, and we can't wait to see the incredible impact she makes through this fellowship. 💛 #SFF #WAJAMAMAStrong #AVF #SFFrockstars #AfricanVisionaryFellowship #AfricanVisionaryFellow ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you recognize any other changemakers in this cohort? Founder & Team Lead

Celebrating Nafisa and WAJAMAMA Community Health on International Women’s Day Yesterday, I had the privilege of spending the day with Nafisa, the Founder and CEO of Wajamama, learning about the incredible impact she is making in Zanzibar. Wajamama is transforming maternal health—not just in the city, but also in remote areas where access to care is limited. One of the most heartbreaking realities I learned is that 50 children die in Zanzibar every week due to maternal health challenges. Some newborns don’t even get the chance to see the world because of gaps in care. Nafisa is changing that through her work in the island, she is: 1. Providing quality maternal health care to ensure women safely carry their pregnancies to term. 2. Supporting women through their postnatal journey, equipping them with knowledge and resources. 3. Driving systemic change by engaging policymakers to prioritize maternal health. Nafisa is not just creating impact—she is building a sustainable solution that will outlive all of us. It was an honor to spend the day with her, not just as a Segal Family Foundation’s #AfricanVisionaryFellow but as a true changemaker. On this International Women’s Day, I celebrate Nafisa for her vision, leadership, and her dedication to ensuring that women receive the health care they deserve. To all the #women working to create lasting change—your work matters, and the world is better because of you. #HappyInternationalWomensDay! #IWD2025 #MaternalHealth #WomenLeadingChange #Wajamama #Impact Edith Mwasha Bright Shitemi Jackie Odhiambo Mary Kibai
