We make families, not orphans.

About us

As many as 80 percent of children in residential care facilities – sometimes called “orphanages” – have at least one living parent. Child's i is a a small non-profit with a big impact, we work with governments, national partners and our worldwide network of supporters to highlight the harm and cost of orphanages in Uganda and globally. We partner with the local community to repurpose orphanages into community hubs that support parents and children, aiming to prevent separation. We facilitate the transition of children into loving Ugandan families and collaborate with the community and local government to prevent family separation. Our approach involves developing truly social services that effectively keep children with their families, enabling them to thrive in a cost-effective manner

We recently conducted a foster care training for 25 foster parents from Mpigi district. The training offered these parents with insights on bonding with the children, responsibilities of foster parents, child protection policies among others. This training empowers parents with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a safe and loving family environment for children ultimately enabling them to thrive. At Child’s i, we are committed to preparing foster parents as they embark on their journey of fostering vulnerable children. By equipping them with the necessary knowledge and insights, we enhance their ability to support and nurture the children placed in their care. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every child not only feels safe but also thrives within their foster family. "We regularly hold foster care training sessions to thoroughly prepare foster parents for their roles and to help them understand what children need to thrive in a family environment. Over the years, these trainings have proven essential in equipping foster parents to embrace the full responsibility of nurturing and caring for the children placed in their homes," said Emmanuel Iga, DI Manager for Mpigi.

It’s so encouraging to see kinship care being prioritised in the UK’s latest Budget announcement! Research from Family for Every Child shows that kinship care is the preferred form of alternative care, offering children continuity, stability, and a strong sense of identity and belonging through their social networks. This aligns with our approach Child's i Foundation where we prioritise kinship care through our Grandmothers Project, delivered in partnership with Nyaka Kinship care allows children to stay connected with family, culture, and community, which is crucial for their well-being and development. The new £44 million funding commitment, including a trial of kinship allowances in up to 10 local authorities, is a significant step forward. I look forward to more details and the learning we can take from this.

Today, the UK Government has announced that the forthcoming Budget on Wednesday 30 October will include £44 million funding to support kinship and foster carers in England. This will include "trialling a new kinship allowance in up to 10 local authorities to test whether paying an allowance to cover certain costs – like supporting a child to settle into a new home with relatives – can help increase the number of children taken in by family members and friends". https://loom.ly/Q172hII Responding to the announcement, Chief Executive of Kinship, Dr Lucy Peake, said: "We are pleased that the Government has made a commitment to trialling a new kinship allowance so that more children can be raised in well-supported kinship care with family and friends who love them, delivering better outcomes for children and for the public purse than the care system. "We look forward to further reforms to children’s social care which should ensure that all kinship families get the financial, practical and emotional support they need and deserve." Please note that we do not have any further details at this point on the kinship allowance trial, including which type of kinship carers will be eligible, which local authorities are involved, or how the allowance will be delivered. We look forward to seeing further details in the Budget and will share these with you as soon as they are known. Today's announcement follows a commitment made by the previous Government in the National Kinship Care Strategy last year to deliver a financial allowances pathfinder in up to 8 local authorities.

🌍 We’re proud to present at the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child in Maseru, Kingdom of Lesotho. This was a powerful opportunity to discuss critical issues affecting children. Grace Mwangi, our Kenya Country Director (pictured), addressed the urgent need to deliver care reform processes while ensuring robust monitoring and evaluation at every step. She emphasised the importance of member states having clear guidance on transitioning care systems, with active involvement from caregivers, partner organizations, and children with lived experience of care systems. Our message to the Committee was clear: Every child, including those currently without parental care, deserves to grow up in a safe, loving family. We are grateful to be part of this crucial conversation, but the work won’t stop here. 💛 Together, we can create a world where every child thrives. 👉 Join us in advocating for better care for all children. Let’s build a future where no child is left behind. #ChildWelfare #CareReform #FamilyForEveryChild #Advocacy #Lumos #AfricanCommittee #ChildrensRights

Understanding the experiences, needs and wishes of children and youth in care is critical if social service workers are to provide the support & services most needed.  In partnership with Martin James Foundation, Child i Foundation and Child Frontiers, we asked 133 young people and caregivers what support they need and the qualities they look for in a #socialworker. See what they had to say: https://loom.ly/zjhL698

Millions of children around the world are separated from their families, with many of them living in institutions. We believe that children thrive best in family care rather than institutions. The social service workforce plays a pivotal role in preventing separation and supporting children to be placed back into families. This week, we honour the social service workforce for their tireless efforts and commitment to support communities and ensure that children are thriving in families. Care reform is only possible with a strong and motivated social service workforce. We also shine the light on one of our own social workers at Child's i Foundation, Julius Kasirivu. His dedication and skills ensure that children and families are thriving. Today, Sumaeya Nassuna from the Association of Care Leavers Uganda shared valuable insights on the involvement of young people in care reform during the “Strengthening the Social Service Workforce for Family Care: Global Insights” webinar. Sumaeya highlighted the importance of addressing capacity gaps among youth with lived experiences, empowering them to advocate for care reforms using their own voices. “There is a need for evidence-based policies that address the issues faced by care leavers and care-experienced youth. This evidence must include not only academic research but also the authentic voices of these youth,” she noted. She also emphasised the crucial role of the social service workforce in mentoring and equipping young people leaving care with essential skills. The webinar featured contributions from countries like Jordan and Cambodia, which shared their unique perspectives and progress on care reform. #SSWWeek #CareReform #CareLeavers Better Care Network USAID @Partnership Plus @Global Alliance Social Service Workforce

Many children grow up in institutions because they do not have a loving home and family. Adoptive parents offer loving families to children who are unable to be reunited with their biological families. This week we honour National Adoption week in the UK and the incredible journeys of families brought together through adoption. We share with you Bernard's family's inspirational journey to adopting baby Mary. Today, we join the rest of the world to raise awareness about mental health and emphasise the critical need to prioritise the mental health and well being for young care leavers and care-experienced youth as they transition into independent living. Many young people transitioning from care face unique challenges, including trauma, lack of support networks, and difficulties in accessing mental health services. It's vital that we prioritise their mental well-being to help them thrive in independent living. We must advocate for supported independent living, create safe spaces for open conversations about mental health and the lasting negative effects of institutional care and provide tailored resources and mentorship. Child’s i under its Youth Wellbeing Champions Project in partnership with the Association of Care Leavers Uganda and No Limit Generation developed a toolkit with an aim of providing families, social workers, and youth-serving organisations, including students of social work with the tools to start important, non-judgmental conversations about mental health and wellbeing. We continue to champion efforts towards empowering care experienced youth. #WorldMentalHealthDay #SupportCareLeavers #MentalHealthMatters #ChildsiFoundation #EmpowerYouth #TraumaInformedCare
