  • This season, 300,000 tree seedlings were distributed to the mobilized target communities across 11 parishes in Masindi and Buliisa districts. The goal is to restore 2,800 hectares of degraded buffer zones and community lands along the Waaki River Catchment Area and Budongo Central Forest Reserve, a vital habitat for chimpanzees. Women’s groups in both districts have played a key role in producing the tree seedlings for the project. In addition to indigenous tree species, local farmers received high-value crops such as coffee and cocoa, as livelihood diversification, contributing to both environmental restoration and economic growth. To ensure the success of the tree planting, local farmers also received awareness training on proper planting techniques, supported by their sub-county agricultural extension officers. The training included hands-on demonstrations where participants learned about proper spacing, pitting, and other best practices for tree planting and growth. The GREENER Project targets to plant 790,000 seedlings. In the second year, local farmers will be assisted in forming cooperatives to market their coffee and cocoa products, further adding economic value. Beyond restoration, the Project is committed to address gender-specific challenges, combat inequality, and reduce poverty, by empowering both women and men, through enhancing the resilience of local communities and protect the natural ecosystems. #GREENERProject #Uganda #CommunityLed #JaneGoodall #Gender #Economic #SustainableDevelopment #Restoration #ClimateChange #ClimateResilience #NaturalResources Austrian Development Agency  Jane Goodall Institute Austria

  • Exciting News! We have officially signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Uganda Biodiversity Fund, marking a significant milestone in our conservation efforts. This partnership will grant us access to essential funding through UBF to support our Northern Albertine conservation interventions. After years of negotiations with some funders and lobbying for UBF to serve as a middleman, we at JGI are confident that this collaboration will pave the way for impactful steps. #Conservation #Impact #Partnership #MoU #Biodiversity #NorthernAlbertineRift #Sustainable #JGI #Uganda

  • Celebrating National Tree Planting Day 2024 Today, We proudly participated in the National Tree Planting Day organized by the @Ministry of Water and Environment. Every year, we support this impactful program with UGX 6 million which is aimed to plant one tree per Ugandan, totaling 40 million trees annually. This year’s celebration took place at Sir Samuel Baker Secondary School in Gulu District, and we are honored to join other institutions in planting a ceremonial tree alongside the Chief Guest, Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo. Together, we continue to green Uganda. #NationalTreePlantingDay #Conservation #GreenUganda #JGI #Uganda #PlantATree #Ministry #Water #Environment

  • Community nurseries established for sustainable growth   Through Green Lung III Extension Project with support of Jane Goodall Institute Austria, we managed to strengthen four community groups in participation of tree nursery operation, addressed the existing gaps and unlock new opportunities for sustainability. Through these refresher meetings, we gathered vital information and discussed the potential for raising high-value seedlings.   By ensuring 50% participation of women, we were thrilled to further engage members in focusing on the principles of nursery management, commercial operations, and profit generation. We provided them with essential equipment, supplies, and inputs to enhance nursery operations. Additionally, we have helped them to establish a “Tree Fund Account” under the existing Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA), alongside seed capitalization, to ensure ongoing financial sustainability.   #Community #Growth #SustainableDevelopment #ForestReserve

  • JGI Uganda and Chimpanzee Trust (CT) celebrates #WorldChimpanzeeDay2024 Yesterday, on July 14, we were thrilled to celebrate #WorldChimpanzeeDay jointly with CT at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, home to rescued and orphaned chimpanzees. The event was graced by Ms. Diana Kyaremera Museveni, who has championed the National Chimpanzee Conservation Strategy 2023-2033. She organized its first-ever fundraising event at the State House, Entebbe. Our ED, Mr. James Byamukama, who also serves as a board member of the Chimpanzee Trust, acknowledged the contributions of chimp caretakers, researchers, and veterinary doctors. He commended them as heroes dedicated to protecting chimpanzees in both captive and wild environments. Mr. Byamukama also shared the historical background of #WorldChimpanzeeDay and called for increased awareness and passion for chimpanzee conservation. The Jane Goodall Institute

Unlike monkeys, chimpanzees are great apes and do not have tails. They exhibit incredible intelligence, tool-making abilities, and complex social structures. Dr. Goodall's call to action: Share your stories and experiences with chimpanzees for next year's 65th celebrations! Let's raise awareness about these amazing creatures and the challenges they face. Join us in celebrating #WorldChimpanzeeDay. Spread the word on Social media. Don't forget to mention or tag us. Together, we can make a difference. The Jane Goodall Institute

  • Happy World Chimpanzee Day 2024 In honor of humankind’s closest living relatives, this year we are celebrating chimpanzees and the people who have done so much work to help save them. #WorldChimpanzeeDay marks the anniversary of Dr. Jane Goodall’s arrival in Gombe, Tanzania, on July 14, 1960, where she began her groundbreaking research. This day is a tribute to these intelligent creatures and the dedicated efforts to protect them. Did you know chimpanzees greet each other with a “Pant-Hoot”? Record your best Pant-Hoot as a group or individual and share it on social media. Use hashtags #WorldChimpanzeeDay and #SaveChimpanzees, and mention or tag us as well. Join us in celebrating and learning more about these amazing beings.
