New Post on “What are the best ways to fight the next pandemic?"! We are excited to share the latest article in our "Anonymous Answers: Biosecurity" series, where Tessa Alexanian and I gathered insights from over a dozen leading biosecurity experts. This article covers the experts’ views on: - The relative importance of technical interventions versus policy work - The prioritization of prevention strategies versus response capabilities - The focus on natural pandemic threats versus deliberate biological risks - The role of intelligence and national security in pandemic preparedness - The importance of behavioral science and public communication in crisis response - The potential of various technologies like improved PPE, biosurveillance, and pathogen-agnostic approaches A few months ago, we released our first article on common misconceptions in biosecurity (https://lnkd.in/e6H8af8Y). Over the next couple of weeks, we will publish two more articles covering expert insights on dual-use information and the intersection of artificial intelligence and biotechnologies. • Can't AI also do a lot of good? • Why can't we just unplug a dangerous AI? • Is it even possible to produce artificial general intelligence? • Couldn't we just 'sandbox' any potentially dangerous AI system until we know it's safe? • Surely a truly intelligent AI system would know not to disempower everyone? • Isn't the real danger from actual current AI — not some sort of futuristic superintelligence? • Why shouldn't I dismiss this as motivated reasoning by a group of people who just like playing with computers and want to think that's important? • This all reads, and feels, like science fiction • Can it make sense to dedicate my career to solving an issue based on a speculative story about a technology that may or may not ever exist? • Is this a form of Pascal's mugging — taking a big bet on tiny probabilities? We think there are strong responses to all of these arguments against working on AI risk — read our answers to these questions in our full, updated article on why we think this is among the most pressing problems in the world:
Preventing an AI-related catastrophe - Problem profile
