The national charity supporting women & families affected by Postpartum Psychosis, a severe yet treatable mental illness
About us
Action on Postpartum Psychosis (APP) is a national charity supporting women and families affected by Postpartum Psychosis. Postpartum Psychosis (PP) is a severe mental illness which begins suddenly following childbirth. Over 1400 women experience PP each year in the UK (1 to 2 in every 1000 mothers). An episode of PP can be very frightening for women and their families. Most women go on to make a full recovery, however the journey to full recovery can be long and difficult. Our Peer Support network helps women and families affected by PP feel understood, supported and less isolated. Thanks to Big Lottery funding and with the support of world-leading academic and clinical experts, an amazing, supportive, peer-led, lived experience community has been developed. Our evaluation shows that the service saves lives and improves recovery outcomes. It is the only PP support network in the UK, and the largest in the world. Action on Postpartum Psychosis (APP) is a registered charity, hosted by the University of Birmingham. We are a collaborative project between: women and families with personal experience of PP; world leading academics who research PP; and health professionals who support women and families during and after an episode. We have over 900 members throughout the UK and further afield who have experienced PP themselves.

I just was not acting like myself because I am normally a really reserved person.' Watch the free recording of APP’s webinar: Essential knowledge for preventing maternal suicide. This recording is aimed at GPs and other frontline health professionals. Suicide is the leading cause of maternal death in the UK and rates are increasing nationally. APP’s second annual Alex Baish Memorial webinar outlined the actions needed to support and protect women who develop postpartum psychosis (PP). The webinar was delivered in collaboration with The National Centre for Mental Health at Cardiff University (NCMH) and General Practitioners Championing Perinatal Mental Health Care (GPCPC). We would like to say a huge thank you to our speakers. 3,890 health professionals signed up for the 2024 webinar. Of the 2023 attendees, 92% rated the training as ‘excellent' and 100% agreed they would change their practice as a result. 💻 Watch back here: https://lnkd.in/eGh4zVam Please share with your networks to let as many people as possible who work with new mothers know. #PreventingMaternalSuicide

Secrets and Lies: David's Story David’s mother, Flora, suffered from postpartum psychosis in 1933 and died in 1943, before the advent of the NHS and antipsychotic and mood stabiliser medication in the 1950s. David wrote down his moving story for his children by way of a historical record, self-explanation, and a caution of the risks of failing to communicate about mental health.
