"Change is required - we need a new national plan guaranteeing every child 60 active minutes a day." The National Sector Partners Group is urging the government to prioritize young people's health in the upcoming 30 October budget. ⤵ Let's work together to ensure every child has daily opportunities to be active.
A statement from the National Sector Partners Group: On 30 October, the UK Government will announce its Budget – the first of a new Parliament. We know that increasing opportunities for physical activity in childhood can break down barriers to opportunity and help create the healthiest and happiest generation of British children and that’s why, in this Budget, the Government must deliver for children and young people. Sadly, at present less than half (47%) of children and young people are active for 60 minutes a day as recommended by the UK's Chief Medical Officers. Change is required - we need a new national plan guaranteeing every child 60 active minutes a day. The Government can use this Budget to help break down barriers and ensure every child and young person has opportunities to be physically active every day, in schools and communities. This can be achieved by extending funding for successful and impactful programmes currently delivering physical activity, including the Primary PE & Sport Premium, Opening School Facilities and Holiday Activities and Food programmes, as well as guaranteeing safe spaces to be active and access to high-quality coaches and activity professionals outside of the school environment. Key to progress is the Government working in partnership with the National Sector Partners Group and the wider sport, physical activity and recreation sector, as well as with other sectors such as education and health. By doing so, and unlocking the potential held across communities to deliver opportunities reaching every child, the Government can harness the power of physical activity to support young people to develop a life-long love of movement, improving both their physical and mental health.
