Last Friday, our little Squirrel was out onsite monitoring the condition of a damaged wind turbine. It was working bravely in 45mph winds (that's Storm Force 8 for the sailors out there) - 3x the safe operating conditions for a drone, and 2x that for rope-based manual inspections. As wind turbines tend to be in windy places, this means that inspections can be scheduled more easily, with greater utilisation and less risk of delays. The data collected looked under the paint to see the real condition of the turbine, and potentially saved the asset owner and insurer millions in remedial work, while costing approximately 10% of the equivalent manual inspection. In realworld conditions, if you own critical infrastructure assets in wind, oil & gas, telecoms, road and rail, you have to employ Squirrels. Lukas M.
