Socialising as part of a community is critical to combating isolation and loneliness.   This was appreciated last week when we welcomed The Mayor of Kempston, Councillor Nawaz, to tour The Newells in Kempston and share afternoon tea. “I enjoyed meeting a group of homeowners and can see that there’s already a real sense of community with plenty of social events and activities taking place. I was particularly impressed with the quality of the facilities too from the restaurant, the coffee lounge and the landscaped gardens, to the beautiful apartments. Today, 1st October, is the International Day of Older Persons. Designated as such by the United Nations General Assembly back in 1990, it is marked each year with a different theme to raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges faced by our ageing populations.   This year’s theme is “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide”. At Adlington Retirement Living we know that having a support network is important at any time of life, but it becomes increasingly important in later life. We recently spoke to a number of our homeowners who told us how the support provided by our on-site teams makes a difference to them.   Angela and Tim who moved to The Spindles in Menston:   “We were planning ahead and thinking, if we need some help, we need people that we can rely on. Our daughter lives in Germany now with her husband and two boys. And our son is in Canada, with his wife and two children. They were getting worried that we’re getting old and had no support around us.”   “I think that was a big reason for Angela. She was worried that if anything happened to me, she didn't want to be on her own. Either in an emergency or long term.” It’s not just the support in an emergency that’s important. Our plans for a new retirement community in Knighton, Leicester are looking good. We have submitted planning to build 96 new apartments on the site of the former Mary Gee Halls of Residence, which have been vacant since 2018. The proposed retirement community will comprise stylish one, two and three-bedroom apartments for the over 60’s, in a safe and secure environment, with the benefit of patios or walk-out balconies. The proposed design-led development will be a positive addition to the Stoneygate Conservation Area, complementing the character of the surrounding buildings. In addition to enjoying their own peaceful and spacious apartments, homeowners will be able to spend time in the leafy gardens (maintained by an expert team of gardeners), relax in the hair salon, therapy suite or homeowners’ lounge and enjoy the restaurant. Anne, one of our homeowners who moved to an existing Adlington Retirement Living community in January 2023, said: “It’s the best of both worlds – you have your own home, but you’ve got an added sense of security and you’re not alone. Many of the worries are taken off your shoulders. You no longer have to worry about the structure of your property, about the well-being of your building, about looking after the garden. All of those things are taken care of. You still have all your own independence and your own privacy. You have your own front door - your post comes through your own letterbox.    “When I moved in, almost immediately I thought ‘yes, I’ve done the right thing’. I feel so lucky to be here. It’s just wonderful for me. It all worked so well.”
