𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 In this blogpost, Clare Killingback, University of Hull argues that while individual initiatives like teaching stress management techniques or offering yoga sessions are helpful, they're merely "necessary but not sufficient." She says true transformation requires a systems-wide approach where compassion flows through every relationship and process within the institution. Key insights: · Universities are fundamentally "networks of human relationships" - and compassion must extend in all directions, from students to VCs and everyone in between. · Leaders at all levels should model healthy work-life balance rather than "unhappy, stressed, workaholic adulthood". · We need "courageous conversations" to reform policies and systems that don't promote compassion. · Relationship quality directly impacts learning outcomes - creating environments of trust where "someone has our back". In today's challenging economic climate for higher education, it's tempting to see wellbeing initiatives as luxury add-ons. But what if compassionate systems are actually essential to institutional success? What structural barriers prevent compassion from flourishing in educational settings?
