Assessment in higher education is an area that provokes passionate debate, angst and so many questions. What purpose should it serve? Is it necessary at all? And, if so, how should it be designed and delivered? This week’s Campus podcast digs deep in seeking answers. Campus editor Miranda Prynne talks to three experts from US institutions to examine the nature of institutionalised education, how assessment can better serve learning, and the impact of grading and compliance. She talks to: Susan D. Blum, professor of anthropology at the University of Notre Dame and an award-winning author and educator, whose latest book is Schoolishness: Alienated Education and the Quest for Authentic, Joyful Learning; Catherine Wehlburg, president of Athens State University and president of the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education; and Josh Eyler, director of the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and clinical assistant professor of teacher education at the University of Mississippi , and author of Failing our Future: How Grades Harm Students and What We Can Do about It. These thoughtful conversations offer a range of perspectives on what role assessment should play in higher education and how it can be improved. https://lnkd.in/eJRJ8kbQ #education #highered #assessment #timeshighereducation

Is the global academic publishing system broken - a victim of too much manipulation, abuse and exploitation? What can be done? What role can university rankings play? This special session that I'm chairing at the Times Higher Education Asia Universities Summit next month is a "must" attend. With my colleague Billy Wong, THE's principal data scientist, and special guests, we'll be: "Rethinking academic publishing: Balancing quality, impact and pressure". The pressure to “publish or perish” has long shaped academic careers, but is the current publishing culture truly serving the advancement of knowledge? Our panel will explore the evolving landscape of academic publishing, questioning the balance between quantity and quality, the role of rankings and impact metrics and the unintended consequences of a system that can prioritise publication volume over meaningful research. The session will discuss how academia can foster a more sustainable and ethical publishing culture – one that values rigorous scholarship, diverse contributions and impact over sheer output. How has the “publish or perish” culture influenced academic research priorities and career trajectories? Are universities and funding bodies placing too much emphasis on publication quantity over quality and innovation? What alternative ways could universities, funding agencies and rankers assess academic contributions beyond traditional publishing metrics? What challenges do researchers from emerging economies face in the global publishing landscape? Find our more about the session in the link below, and share your thoughts ahead of the #THEAsia session in the comments. #researchintegrity #publishorperish Thanks Bhavit Mehta for putting the session together. Can a university be truly "world class" if it is not facing out into the world and internationally connected and engaged? I think not. Today Times Higher Education publishes its annual list of the world's most international research universities - with data extracted from the THE World University Rankings exploring international research collaborations, international staff and student attraction, and international academic reputation. Huge congratulations to City University of Hong Kong for taking the world number one position, and to no fewer than FOUR Hong Kong universities for taking all top four places, thanks to an enviable position at the heart of a global education and research hub, in the thriving greater bay area. Abu Dhabi University represents the middle east, in fifth place, with European universities taking the rest of the top ten (and the UK and Switzerland standing out as truly international hot-beds). The full ranking is here: “The grand challenges facing the world… are too big for individual universities; they need integrated international teams,” said Alice Gast when she took over as President of Imperial College London back in 2014. “The future holds great challenges but great universities will meet them by joining forces.” Last year I wrote for the World Economic Forum on how important it was for universities to transcend geopolitics and remain outward looking. Today that feels like a more important message then ever. See: https://lnkd.in/eRRPdvWQ #THEUniRankings #internationaleducation #intled

Hong Kong is the breakaway leader in this year’s list of the world’s most international universities, mainly thanks to its relationship with its massive neighbour. Hong Kong claimed all top four spots in the 2025 ranking, with a fifth institution notching 11th place. All five moved up the leader board – apart from City University of Hong Kong, which had nowhere to rise to as it topped the ranking for the second time in a row. Heavyweight research nations like the US, China, Germany and France predictably dominated the ranking of 217 institutions. But most saw their performance slide, with far more institutions moving down the table than up – particularly American, Chinese, Japanese, Russian and South Korean institutions. Exceptions to this trend were the UK and Australia, both of which had considerably more institutions moving up than down – albeit not their frontrunners. Top 10 most international universities in the world 2025 1. City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong 2. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong 3. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong 4. The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong 5. Abu Dhabi University, United Arab Emirates 6. University of Oxford, UK 7. Imperial College London, UK 8. University of Cambridge, UK 9. ETH Zürich, Switzerland 10. École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL, Switzerland View the full results here: https://lnkd.in/gqR5SVc Read our analysis here: https://lnkd.in/eex9G2u7 #timeshighereducation #THEUniRankings #highereducation #universityrankings #universities #highered #university
