Supporting the UK’s largest network of independent advice services
About us
AdviceUK is the UK's largest support network for free, independent advice centres. We work alongside our members to help individuals and communities to enforce their rights and improve their quality of life, through the provision of social welfare advice. Our member organisations are very diverse both in terms of size and in their ways of working. Some, like National Debtline and Shelter, are large organisations with predominantly paid staff. However, many are small community-based organisations, very often staffed and managed by part-time volunteers. For many AdviceUK members, provision of advice is their core work. However, for a significant minority advice is only one of a range of services provided in the context of their wider activities (for example, housing associations, credit unions, student unions, and women’s refuges). Most of our members work in areas with high levels of deprivation, and over a quarter serve a particular community of interest (for example, BME community groups, estate-based community projects, people with particular health needs or disabilities). AdviceUK has pioneered the use of Vanguard Consulting’s Systems Thinking in the advice sector. From our work we know that advice can help public services learn where and how things go wrong. Commissioning advice to ‘do better things’ could help public bodies improve services and reduce costs. Can you support Jonathan's epic challenge today, to travel from London to Leeds in 24 hours only via local bus services, to raise money for The Access to Justice Foundation? #AccessToJustice #AdviceSaves
Good morning! It’s just before 3am outside the Bank of England at the start of my London to Leeds by local bus in 24 hours challenge, to raise funds for The Access to Justice Foundation. Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me to do this challenge. As I leave Threadneedle Street I have raised almost £1,200. I will keep you updated on my progress via a thread 🧵from this post. As I travel through cities and towns on my journey, I will highlight some of the free legal advice organisations that the The Access to Justice Foundation supports throughout the UK. Before catching my first bus for a short hop to Aldwych, I first wanted to recognise, and say thank you, to all Bank of England Legal Directorate colleagues who participate in our pro bono programme, providing free legal advice at South Westminster Legal Advice Centre or via Free Legal Answers.

Independent Age were recently in Parliament to emphasise the urgent need for support for those in later life. Another powerful example of how #AdviceSaves.
We were in Parliament this week to highlight how policy solutions can improve later life for all. Yvonne and Jo joined us to reveal more about the reality of pensioner poverty. Yvonne shared her experiences of living in financial hardship while Jo, an Independent Age Helpline adviser, provided an important insight into the calls we receive every day from older people struggling to get by. We can and must do more to ensure older people receive the support they need. Let's work together to end poverty in later life. Thank you to our co-sponsors Steve Darling MP and John Milne MP. Earlier today, I was at BBC Broadcasting House speaking with Shay on BBC Radio London about the rising cost of living—particularly the upcoming increases in energy bills, council tax, and water charges. We discussed the real impact on households, the growing number of people struggling with energy debt, and the importance of seeking advice early. Many Londoners are doing everything they can to keep up, yet wages aren’t rising at the same rate as essential bills. At Debt Free Advice, we’ve already helped people with over £587,000 in energy debt since January, and we know many more will be worried about what’s to come. 📢 If you’re feeling overwhelmed by rising costs, you don’t have to face it alone. Our team is here to help—whether you need guidance on reducing your bills, accessing financial support, or managing debts before they escalate. 📞 Call us on 0800 808 5700 💬 Start a discreet WhatsApp chat 🖥️ Visit www.debtfreeadvice.com You can also listen to the full interview here ⬇️
