In the face of today’s existential threats — the climate and nature crisis, pandemics, nuclear risks, and unregulated AI — Mandela’s enduring lessons are as important as ever. Leaders must embrace his visionary leadership and confront problems with honesty, justice and empathy. Our best future and Mandela’s vision can be achieved with a new approach to decision making, if our leaders act with the courage and urgency required. This is why The Elders are calling for #LongviewLeadership. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/egwtYXbn #NelsonMandela #MandelaDay

On Mandela Day, we celebrate how Madiba’s remarkable legacy, wisdom and model of ethical leadership has guided The Elders' path over the past 17 years. By carrying forward his principles and values, we aim to keep his memory alive, ensuring that his vision for a more just and peaceful world continues to drive meaningful change. Though today's challenges may differ, our group remains committed to the mandate he entrusted to us years ago. Learn more about Mandela’s influence on The Elders here: https://lnkd.in/epWNJu7V

We urge all states to submit statements for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Advisory Opinion on #ClimateChange – from frontline nations highlighting dire climate impacts and from developed countries acknowledging the differentiated responsibility, weakened in recent times. The new extended deadline for submissions is 15 August 2024. To learn more about the importance of an International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on Climate Change, explore this guest vlog created for The Elders by Vishal Prasad, Campaign Director for Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change: https://lnkd.in/e3wsJv4V #ICJAO4Climate

Elders' Chair Mary Robinson congratulates Masoud Pezeshkian on his election as President of Iran, urging respect for this mandate for change from the Iranian people and calling for renewed dialogue on international security. Read the comment in full below: "I congratulate President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian on his victory. Millions of Iranians voted for a better life and greater freedoms. Masoud Pezeshkian should be given the opportunity to deliver meaningful change, including on women’s equality and the dress code. His win also provides a clear mandate for Iran to engage in good-faith dialogue and negotiations over its nuclear programme. The USA, together with the UK, France, Germany and the EU, should seize this chance to re-engage. Renewed talks could lift sanctions and benefit the Iranian people, while also strengthening long-term nuclear non-proliferation in the region."

"History will judge your efforts." Speaking at yesterday's United Nations Security Council Session on Children and Armed Conflict, Ban Ki-moon conveyed deep shock and outrage at the escalation of grave violations against children in 2023, and the decades-long failures of political will to address the issue. Mr Ban also raised the profound concern of all Elders with the continuously high levels of sexual violence against girls in conflicts worldwide and implored Council Members to fulfil their responsibility to hold perpetrators accountable, and ensure the rights of survivors and their children are respected. In his concluding call to the Council, he outlined the need for urgent reform of the international peace and security architecture and urged all member states to seize the opportunity to build a better, safer future for the children of the world. Women disproportionately bear the brunt of global crises, experiencing higher levels of poverty, violence, and systemic discrimination. As the world faces existential threats from climate change, to pandemics, nuclear weapons, and the risks of AI, women’s leadership is crucial. Their unique perspectives and experiences ensure that international diplomacy is both responsive and inclusive. By prioritising the needs of the most marginalised and advocating for sustainable, long-term solutions, women leaders can drive transformative change. The Elders include many pioneering women leaders, and all Elders are committed to promoting gender equality and women’s leadership globally.
