Television market value per HH is on par with social media; the fundamental question is, is that right? That is the analysis of Guy Bisson (look at chart) as a preview for his presentation at Future TV Sydney on April 8th. In the video, Guy reflects on the threat from streamers and global platforms and how traditional players should engage and collaborate to thrive. In order to fight back against social media, who are taking as much or if not more money than TV in Australia, broadcasters must rethink the landscape they operate in to take back their fair share. It's worth adding, local players in the market have stablised their businesses (mostly) and some have seen growth in audiences across digital and linear properties. A lot has changed in Australia and New Zealand in one year so you can expect a lot of new talk around working with global platforms, collaboration, M&A and what growth will look like in the ANZ region. Can it sometimes feel like a battle between brands, media owners and agencies? At the most recent Future 100 Club roundtable, the focus of discussion turned to improving collaboration. The group identified one particular way to boost this: bringing media owners together with clients in the early stages of campaign planning. Highlighting how discussions around collaboration are often about just agency and advertiser, Lee Mabey (MBA), dentsu X, said: “The media owner is the under-utilised part of the process. Get them into the conversation.” This was certainly the consensus among those in the room who worked at media owners. Kate Tovey, director of customer engagement at JCDecaux UK, pointed out: “The role of what is being asked of a media owner has changed. Sometimes we can be used in quite an implementational way and that doesn’t scratch the surface of how we can add value.” Part of that is to do with the sheer amount of new tools and products that each media owner offers and that agencies and brands are expected to be aware of. One key way to improve this process is the sharing of best practices and use cases so that agencies are kept abreast of new developments, the group agreed.
