Last day of IAC2024 - today I will present in the new session E9.4 on Space Carrying Capacity Assessment and Allocation. The work I will present is based on previous work in collaboration with GMV and European Space Agency - ESA on modelling risk for individual missions. We now extend this risk model to calculate a metric for overall risk in the space environment. I addition, I will present on behalf of Yirui Wang his work on integrating new risk metrics into mission life cycle assessment. This uses a novel network-theoretic approach to analyse the space environment. This week I am at the IAC2024 in Milan and will be presenting today in session C1.9 Orbital Dynamics. How often do you wonder about the challenges Apollo astronauts faced with moon dust, or what are some lessons learned from developing a Portable Life-Support System? These questions about potential sensitive information can now be answered more easily thanks to our latest project. We (University of Strathclyde Annalisa Riccardi Paul Darm, Heriot-Watt University Alessandro Suglia) just published our lightweight codebase, which explores how to deploy Large Language Models (LLMs) **locally and safely on consumer hardware** for the European Space Agency - ESA. Our primary use case focuses on developing a pipeline for a question-answering system for text data without relying on any 3rd party services, so that potential sensitive files and generated answers never leave the system. To showcase this capability, we've transcribed *NASA's Spacesuit Knowledge Capture Seminars*, allowing users to explore topics such as abrasiveness of lunar dust to Apollo spacesuits. Another **highlight** is our plugin prototype to **visualise and compare generated answers with the original source documents** for quick and reliable answer verification. Besides knowledge management use cases, we are looking forward to exploring other potential applications of LLMs deployed on edge devices in future projects. #Disaster #Response is another extremely important application of Space DAO. How to trust a single source of emergency mapping and use it to save lives? ⌨️ In a context where Satellites are #onboard #AI algorithms for a new era of #Satellite #Emergency #Mapping is starting, the number of potential information sources is growing and can feed a consensus mechanism that would reduce risk in single sourced info. 🛰️ We talk a lot about decentralizing space traffic, and this is pretty much the same principles in disaster response: Local authority needs the best-to-the-common-knowledge information to organize their emergency response. ♾️ Robert Cowlishaw and Annalisa Riccardi have worked hard the last two years to push the research in that domain in order to be ready when more smart satellites are in orbit and decisions rely on them.
