EU’s U-Space tested during complex urban drone operations Engineers have completed tests which operated multiple autonomous unmanned drones simultaneously in urban airspace over Zaragoza, Spain as part of the European Union’s U-ELCOME program. U-ELCOME DSD Project, which is led by ATM organization EUROCONTROL aims to help introduce unmanned drones and airspace management processes into Europe, a concept the EU calls U-Space. The program consists of a set of tests and demonstrations in various operational environments across 15 locations in Spain, Italy, and France. Waygate and GE boost new borescope with AI-assistance GE Aerospace and Waygate Technologies are launching a a commercial jet engine borescope that is enhanced by AI. The borescope will be available to Waygate Technologies customers and introduced to GE Aerospace’s MRO network later this year. The jointly developed borescope is the first time the two companies have collaborated on an inspection device and has been in development since May 2023. Turbomachinery test rig aims to accelerate propulsion innovation A new vertical axis test rig for the compressors, turbines and fans that will play a key role in the next-generation of aero-engines is set to boost propulsion research at the University of Cambridge’s Whittle Laboratory. Developed by UK-based Frewer Engineering in partnership with manufacturers the Hyde Group Limited, the vertical test rig’s closed-loop system and vertical design pushes the boundaries of testing capabilities and will accelerate the development of more efficient and sustainable aircraft engines. Aeralis to use Aerogility AI for future aircraft fleet planning Military training aircraft developer AERALIS is to partner with AI-based digital twin company Aerogility to enhance future fleet planning for its modular military aircraft system. Aeralis is developing a family of light military aircraft with a “digital-first” approach to design, development and design. Its advanced trainer jet features a swept wing design and will provide training for up to 6th generation fighter aircraft pilots. The basic trainer will be used to train pilots for 3rd or 4th generation combat aircraft and will be powered by a single low-bypass turbofan engine, while the third aircraft would be suitable for acrobatic displays. Eve to build eVTOL factory in São Paulo, Brazil Eve Air Mobility is to build the first factory for its eVTOL aircraft in São Paulo, Brazil. The Embraer company has secured a US$88 million loan from Brazil’s National Development Bank (BNDES) to fund the production facility in Taubaté, in the state of São Paulo. The total expected output of the factory will ramp up to 480 aircraft per year, with the site’s production capacity expanded at a rate of 120 aircraft per year “as the market grows” said Eve.
