📢 Big news this week with the publication of the UK government's consultation on proposals for Electricity Market Reform. There is no doubt that changes are needed if the market is to deliver a #NetZero electricity system by the mid-2030s, whilst keeping costs down for consumers. The government also seeks to maintain security of supply during this transition. The long-term plan is for new technologies, such as green hydrogen, to provide low carbon, long- duration energy storage. But in the meantime, some new gas-fired power stations will provide firm backup for wind and solar. However, none of these objectives will be achieved unless barriers to investment are addressed. Coincidentally, concerns about these issues were raised at a recent roundtable meeting on security of supply at the House of Lords, attended by Jeremy Nicholson, Corporate Affairs Officer at Alfa Energy (an Edison Energy company). Nicholson recently shared his insights from the meeting on LinkedIn: https://lnkd.in/eWqYt-9n One speaker summed up the situation in a nutshell: "The problem isn't generation and demand in the wrong place - the problem is the wires are in the wrong place." #UK #EMR #NetZero #SecurityofSupply #Energy #CleanEnergyAdvisory #ExpertswithImpact

And that’s a wrap! What an incredible three days the Alfa Energy (an Edison Energy company) and Edison Energy teams had during Economist Impact’s Sustainability Week. We had the privilege of facilitating an exclusive dialogue with Professor James Skea, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), for special guests including Microsoft, Amazon, Ford Motor Company, Kuehne+Nagel, Red Bull, The Clorox Company, Diageo and Comcast in Parliament, followed by a networking dinner. From leading the IPCC’s 7th assessment cycle to chairing Scotland’s Just Transition Commission, it was an honour to hear directly from Professor Skea, whose contributions to climate science and policy are unparalleled. A special thanks goes out to our co-host of the evening, the Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA). We were also thrilled to be attending and sponsoring the #SustainabilityWeek summit in London. So many important and insightful discussions were had around the continuing efforts and innovative strategies towards a greener future and protecting our planet. One of the many highlights was a panel discussion featuring Dr. Seyed M. Ebrahimi and other esteemed experts, who explored the benefits of a collaborative approach to sustainable supply chain management as a way to address Scope 3 emissions. The discussion explored navigating complex supply chain networks, which can be a daunting task for any CSO. The discussion centred around how chief supply chain and procurement officers should work with CSOs to solve value chain challenges, and how responsibilities are being divided across the supply chain. Some great debate was had. Overall, the week underscored the critical importance of global cooperation and the role each company, sector and institution can play in achieving a more sustainable future. #Economist #SustainabilityWeek #Decarbonisation #SupplyChains #ValueChains #Scope3Emissions #SustainabilityStrategy #Global
