Scotland’s first Space-Comm Expo went off like a shot (read: ‘rocket’). Really splendid turnout and great energy throughout the event - probably the most useful conference I’ve yet attended! Spent much of the first day making use of the attendees-list to set up targeted meetings, an incredibly useful feature - hope this remains standard for conference apps going forward. Afterwards, the Shepherd and Wedderburn event atop the Radisson Red (love me some lawyer-food!) was a great chance to side-step the conference hall formalities while making some new connections, revisiting existing ones and sharing stories, food and drink. Managed to catch more of the stage events throughout the final day - a couple themes I’ll be keeping an eye on: 🇬🇧 🌌 How the new UK gov’t will be treating space. Via Orbital Today - UK Gov.Department for Business & Transport’s Joshua Broom brings some insight on the (rightly, imo) high prioritisation of the space agenda, here - https://lnkd.in/eE2SmHsT. Just a reminder, that even a 7 day shut-down of space-enabled GPS systems would cost the UK over £7 billion GBP. Protecting critical international infrastructure should be near the top of any agenda, alongside sincere pledges to protect the commons - the border-agnostic elements of independent, natural value in the world (just...call it nature, okay). 💚 🔄 How to ensure we’re embedding sustainability into the future space sector and associated capabilities. Policy will be a critical and ongoing part of this - it must observe accurately, and adapt with a conscience. With respect to today’s international tensions, it’s more important than ever to engage with policy makers to remind and ensure that foundational good is not forgotten in the foray. Absent intelligent regulation, as the theory goes - the world’s shared commons are likely to be run to ruin. A difficult balancing act for sure, managing change so that it functions like progress, and not like regression. ... 🍾 to the future, and what there is today! 😁 #SpaceCommExpo #SpaceDebris #Sustainability #Spacetech #APHLN Ruairidh Leishman, Euan Harvey, David Howie, Matt Bull, John Bone, Ralph Riddiough FRSA, Sharon M., Bruce Poston, Geoff McBride, David Lowe, Molly Silk, India Thomson, Michael Horowitz, Agathe Bouis, Oren S., Kartik Kumar, Sam Ramsey, Reuben Hustler, BEng (Hons) (Open), Kundai Moyo, Khurram Hussain, Aphelion Industries.

Aphelion Industries (APHLN) has been named as the one of the finalists for the UK Spacetech of the Year category at the UK 2024 StartUp Awards! ❓ What does APHLN do? 🏴 Scotland's regional Spacetech StartUp winners, Aphelion Industries, develop space-debris mitigation & remediation solutions. Near-term, this means supplying enhanced satellite armour & shielding solutions to improve on-orbit resilience to untracked microdebris. 🛰 🌏 We understand that beyond satellites, the next generation of space-infrastructure: habitats; on-orbit factories; laboratories and long-duration spacecraft, all require better onboard protection vs untracked microdebris threats. Jamie Snape, founder of Aphelion Industries, said: "Recognition is a real motivator. Inside the club - where everyone knows the goal, has helped form the plan and knows what's all in motion - having parts of that process be recognised by other groups externally, it just feels like someone struck gold and shared it with you. Much gratitude to Professor Dylan Jones-Evans OBE, the team of his brainchild project UK-SUA (UK-StartUp Awards) - really thrilled for what's to come, and what a blast Tring will be in September!" 🎊 What are the UK-SUAs? 🎊 The UK StartUp Awards were established to highlight the success of startups across ten nations and regions, and to celebrate the achievements of entrepreneurs in all sectors of the economy. ✅ Supported nationally by Starling Bank, Airwallex, Ambition North Wales, Chime Agency, Development Bank of Wales, EvaBuild, ForrestBrown, GiftRound, GS1 UK, Join Talent, OVHcloud, Project Simply, ScoreApp, SFC Capital and Welsh Government Starling Bank's CIO, Harriet Rees: "Turning an idea into a successful business takes a lot of courage and dedication. Congratulations to Aphelion Industries on making it to this year's UK national final. Start-ups need certainty to plan ahead. It's great to see so many thrive, especially in these challenging economic times." Professor Dylan Jones-Evans OBE, creator of the awards, writes that this year's entries demonstrate the growing importance of entrepreneurs to the UK spacetech sector. "The Spacetech sector now employs 50,000 people and contributes £17.5 billion a year to the UK economy and we wanted to celebrate the emergence of this important sector at this year's UK StartUp Award. Start-ups are contributing to job creation, innovation, and prosperity in this sector and we wanted to highlight the stories of those founders who have spotted the opportunity and taken the risk to launch their own space venture". We now progress to the UK StartUp Awards final at Ideas Fest! 🗓 September 12th, dubbed 'the Glastonbury for Entrepreneurs'! 🎉 🕸 https://lnkd.in/diN3qwMV #space #sustainability #deeptech #SpaceDebris #UKSUA #APHLN
