  • Fantastic to spend some time with Barbara Jones and the Team at the School of Natural Building in Feb. Brilliant work with heritage fabrics, 0 plastics approach and naturally vapour permeable building elements. Limewash is just the beginning but a super place to start, as set out below!

  • We are delighted to announce that PECT has invited us to participate as expert speakers in their upcoming moderated panel discussions. These insightful sessions will explore critical topics, including: 🏡 Enhancing energy efficiency in historic homes 🔧 The complexities of retrofitting heritage properties 🔥 Key considerations for heat pump installations 💡 Effective energy-saving strategies for homeowners These discussions form part of the Peterborough Accelerated Net Zero (PANZ) project—a forward-thinking initiative led by Peterborough City Council and funded by Innovate UK (UKRI)—dedicated to advancing sustainability across the region. PECT is engaging with rural communities throughout Peterborough, facilitating workshops to identify challenges and solutions in improving energy efficiency. We are honored to contribute our expertise on upgrading historic and stone-built homes while preserving their architectural heritage. If you are navigating these challenges in your own home or property, we invite you to join us at Bainton Reading Room on Tuesday, 11th March, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, or reach out to us at 📞 01733 913576. • Concept to Delivery Through Biophilic Design As a practice, we are constantly striving to achieve exceptional Architecture. We want our buildings to be emotionally evocative, built sustainably, contribute to their place and make a positive impact. The site is better with our building on it. As a way of helping us assess each design as it develops, we work with the Principles of Biophilic Design to give definitive criteria to judge against. The following “14 Points” of Biophilic Design are what we use to assess our designs against: 1. Visual Connection with Nature 2. Non-Visual Connection with Nature 3. Non-Rhythmic Sensory Stimuli 4. Thermal & Airflow Variability 5. Presence of Water 6. Dynamic & Diffuse Light 7. Connection with Natural Systems 8. Biomorphic Forms & Patterns 9. Material Connection with Nature 10. Complexity & Order 11. Prospect 12. Refuge 13. Mystery 14. Risk / Peril For more information please follow the link to our Journal post, Incorporating Nature to Improve Well-Being - Biophilic Design : https://lnkd.in/eScfiZU5  #Biophilic #Biophilia #ashmanarchitects #sustainablearchitecture #architect

  • M O D E L L I N G 🏛️ We love making models at Ashman Architects and find it a valuable tool in developing proposals in a really tangible way. There is some innate human connection to seeing a physical representation above viewing proposals purely on screen. Models can perform a variety roles and aid us at different points in the design process, from very quick concept models at sketch design stage through to final presentation models that depict a fully resolved scheme. We often use physical models to help explore how daylight and shadow impact and benefit a design. In many cases we will see further opportunities to test and develop designs that would have otherwise gone unexplored. Models bring an element of magic to presentations and frequently fill clients with childhood joy. They are also a fantastic tool for communicating volumetric ideas or view points where someone might not necessarily be able to wrap their head around a 2D plan. The process of making also aids us in thinking through the design as it takes shape - testing can happen quickly and small modelling accidents could become an unexpected part of a design solution. We would love to work with more clients looking to utilise modelling as part of the design process. If you are interesting in talking more about the benefits please do get in touch. 01733 913576 studio@ashmanarchitects.com www.ashmanarchitects.com

  • S K E T C H I N G At Ashman Architects, we sketch to explore different design solutions. This often starts by exploring concept, looking at proportion, volume, interactions, scale and hierarchy. The sketching process helps quickly flush through a range of options, testing designs or plan and elevation arrangements, looking at massing approaches. If it hasn’t been sketched out, it means the thought hasn’t been properly explored and can’t either be written off or taken forward. Sketching often prompts inspiration for further development. Often designs are worked up off the back of a sketch - you can work through 15 or 20 sketches very, very quickly. We develop sketches across lots of different scales, to explore different themes - at 1:1000 we consider masterplanning constraints, critical views or flows through a space considering the townscape. Initial plan arrangements are sketched at 1:100 and the more detail moments of a plan at 1:50. When looking at how materials join together we are typically sketching at 1:5. We also use sketching for communication with our clients, planning teams, project consultants or contractors on site. It gives us the ability to quickly rough out an option or proposal for discussion without too much time invested. The rough sketch also allows the other party the freedom to feel they can contribute and share their ideas as nothing is yet set in stone. Sketches will then get developed into a more detailed drawing.  95% never see the light of day but some lucky ones will make it into a client presentation to show a key concept or turning point in the design process. • We’ve successfully secured another planning application for our client in Dunmow! The project involved thoughtfully remodeling and extending the existing house to create a spacious family kitchen and living area, while also adding shower facilities to the pool-house. The client expressed interest in potentially incorporating the garage space into the living accommodations. Through a creative design process, we developed a final design that beautifully aligns our vision with the client's brief. #planningwin #dunmow #architecture #design #architecturelovers #architect #home #homedesign #peterborough

  • GENIUS LOCI {The spirit of a place}   Understanding the unique character of a location is essential for us to craft the most fitting design response. As such, a comprehensive assessment of any site is at the heart of our design process. What is the experience of the place? How does the land lie? How does the sun interact with the site? Where does the prevailing wind come from? What stories does the site’s history reveal, and what insights can we gather from the local vernacular?   #geniusloci #sustainablearchitecture #peterborough #architecture #design

  • Planning Win - Norfolk ! We are thrilled to share that we have successfully obtained planning permission for a sensitive and bespoke remodel and extension of a historic property in Norfolk. The project involves expanding the existing detached cottage with a two-storey extension at the rear, which will house a new staircase and utility space on the ground floor, along with a new bedroom suite on the first floor with panoramic countryside views. The space allows a formal and dedicated, light-filled entrance, helping split a programme of home and work, to better control the practical flow and experience of the layout. The design marries historic fabric with new highly insulated timber frame construction. We look forward to moving ahead with the next phase and supporting our clients on-site. If you're dreaming of transforming your home, give us a call and see how we can design a space that's uniquely yours. 🏡✨ Tel: 01733 913576 Email: studio@ashmanarchitects.com #AshmanArchitects #Norfolk #Architecture #PlanningPermission #Sustainablearchitecture #bespoke #extension #countryside
