At Ashman Architects, we sketch to explore different design solutions.
This often starts by exploring concept, looking at proportion, volume, interactions, scale and hierarchy.
The sketching process helps quickly flush through a range of options, testing designs or plan and elevation arrangements, looking at massing approaches. If it hasn’t been sketched out, it means the thought hasn’t been properly explored and can’t either be written off or taken forward.
Sketching often prompts inspiration for further development. Often designs are worked up off the back of a sketch - you can work through 15 or 20 sketches very, very quickly.
We develop sketches across lots of different scales, to explore different themes - at 1:1000 we consider masterplanning constraints, critical views or flows through a space considering the townscape. Initial plan arrangements are sketched at 1:100 and the more detail moments of a plan at 1:50. When looking at how materials join together we are typically sketching at 1:5.
We also use sketching for communication with our clients, planning teams, project consultants or contractors on site. It gives us the ability to quickly rough out an option or proposal for discussion without too much time invested. The rough sketch also allows the other party the freedom to feel they can contribute and share their ideas as nothing is yet set in stone.
Sketches will then get developed into a more detailed drawing. 95% never see the light of day but some lucky ones will make it into a client presentation to show a key concept or turning point in the design process.
