Our Head of Sustainability and Impact Builder, Scott Stonham, had an eco-tastic time attending the GREENTECH FESTIVAL yesterday 💚 Read all about his key takeaways from inspiring speakers including Apolline Roger, Thomas Kolster, Dr Sally Uren, Dale Rickert PhD, Kevin Victory, Carmel McConnell MBE and more ⬇️ #GreenTech #TechForGood #GreenTechFestival

Yesterday I had the privilege to attend the GREENTECH FESTIVAL at the legendary Ministry of Sound ... I haven't been there in about 20 years, and this time there was no time to for boogieing 🕺🪩 It was a really good event and kudos to the organisers for putting it together. Here's some of my key takeaways: I was a little later than planned due to a broken down train, but was still lucky enough to catch the last half of Mary Robinson's (Former President of Ireland) talk. She used a phrase that many of us working in the climate arena will resonate strongly with, "prisoners of hope". It's not just about optimism, it's about an uncontrollable ability to hope for something better that drives us forward. She said for many, the glass isn't even half full, it's much less but we all need to understand there is a tremendous amount of good going on, the most fundamental thing our society needs to do is switch the money flow, moving the $1.87tn that goes into fossil fuels annually, to climate solutions. Later in a panel, Apolline Roger from ClientEarth said we're at a time when "prevention is out of reach" but using a surfing analogy of the moment you find space ahead of the wave, she reminded us we have space to work in to make changes, it's just how we choose to use that space. She said we need technologies, for sure, but also social innovation. On the same panel Thomas Kolster suggested we haven't got the narrative right. We're still using doom-and-gloom messaging which is just not stirring people to action. He also used the phrase "hero trap" to talk about the situation companies get into where they think *their* solution is the hero. He suggested as leaders and change makers we need to help *every one of our stakeholders* to feel like the heroes. Dr Sally Uren used the analogy of a crossroads saying that the "future isn't yet real" we still can influence it, but "self-fulfilling prophecies" matter - echoing Thomas' point about the narrative, which was also picked up later in the day under the point of "the words we use matter". Sally also used an example of a financial instrument ('loan'?) offered by a bank (HSBC?) to illustrate that things are changing, they just need to change faster. The 'loan' interest rate tracked a company's rate of decarbonisation. Dale Rickert PhD asked an interesting question about how to motivate boards towards change, when sustainability in the wake of the energy crisis is now no longer a cost-saver and is often a straight out cost. Sally said big companies suffer a lot from short-term-ism (a point echoed by several throughout the day) but changing the timeframes can reframe the problem from a short term capital expenditure to long term resilience. Some other bite-sized takeaways in the comments...

🚀 Sustainability & Impact Builder Director 🌎 Founder of Digital Carbon Online 🍃 Passionate about Tech + Sustainability 🌱
This is an actual image of an impact startup at the beginning of 2024. It's widely cited that 90% of startups fail. That's even higher for those aiming for positive social or environmental impact. In the tail wind of COVID, impact investing was on the rise. But then, as companies entered 2024, conflated macro-economic factors applied the brakes on investment. Many of this important, impactful startups ended up just like this pier in Brighton. Burnt out skeletons of their former self, cast adrift. Now, we can't fix the macro-economy, but we can do something about it for purpose driven startups. Our Impact Builder is designed to solve this by bringing together funding with expert technical and growth support to de-risk execution and increase the chances of success. "The discovery phase of any project is as much around the known unknowns as it is the unknown unknowns." 💭 So, what does Jonathan Aizlewood mean by this? Many businesses (commendably) believe they already know everything about their product, industry, challenges and opportunities. However, the negative space of design isn't just about addressing what people know they need, it's also about identifying what they don’t know they need. As digital product experts, we can add value to a project during a discovery phase by uncovering a new level of user understanding or product validation 🧘 To discover how we can help you turn unknowns into actionable insights and create impactful digital products, read the full blog 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTitbY5Z #UserExperience #DigitalProduct #ProductDesign
