I'm really happy to share that I am now a certified Retrofit Coordinator. Thank you to Harshad Patel at Synergy Training Centre for supporting me in attaining the ABBE Level 5 Diploma in Retrofit Coordination and Risk Assessment. This course follows on and consolidates the knowledge received through the excellent (AECB) Association for Environment Conscious Building CarbonLite Retrofit Coordination Course. A primary element of the submission was a case study, which I based on a phased retrofit of a 1939, hollow-block Chalet Bungalow in Cornwall. The first phase of the work included the creation of a large South facing window in place of a draughty chimney breast and the thermal upgrade to the fabric of the two front rooms of the house. The installation was designed in layers so that it can be adapted in the future as services change. Mike Wye Ltd and Chris at Back to Earth helped us develop a solid timber floating floor using natural materials that met building regulations. The walls were insulated internally using Thermafleece sheep's wool insulation and Cornish Lime's Cornerstone Insulating Render was used to address the condensation in the bathroom. Thank you also goes to Ecological Building Systems and Earthwise Construction for their advice on ventilation and airtightness and to Chris Worboys of Zenergy who worked with us on an initial PHPP model for the design, which helped direct our approach to the linear thermal bridge caused by the distinctive balcony. The building work was carried out by Tim Pickard and his attention to detail, care in installing the airtight layer and proactive approach to the challenges of the design, has made for a well built and very comfortable retrofitted home.
