  • Several major schemes will either be finished or will make considerable progress in Swansea this year in a further boost for city centre footfall. The schemes will lead to thousands more people working in the city centre to help create the footfall that's needed to support existing traders and attract more shops and other businesses. Developments soon due to be complete include the new office project at 71/72 The Kingsway. Developed by Swansea Council and part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal and the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO), the scheme - being constructed by Bougyes UK - will provide space for 600 jobs. Over 75% of the office space at the development is now under offer and tenants will start to be announced in the coming weeks. Also due for completion this year is the Y Storfa community services hub at the former BHS unit on Oxford Street. It will include some council services, the city's main public library, the Swansea office of Careers Wales, the Welsh Glamorgan Archive Service, Citizens Advice Swansea Neath Port Talbot, the South Wales Miners Library and other public services. As part of the council's partnership with regeneration specialists Urban Splash, construction work is also anticipated to start this year on a new public sector hub building at the former St David's Shopping Centre site. Hundreds of council staff will be based there, along with staff from other public sector organisations. Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: "We all want a thriving city centre but we know more footfall is needed there to support our existing traders and attract more shops and other businesses in future. "That's why a £1bn regeneration programme is ongoing to help ensure thousands more people are working and living in the city centre. That will then create the kind of spending shops need to open and thrive. "Swansea Arena has already opened and projects to reopen both The Palace Theatre building and the Albert Hall are complete. "The new office scheme at 71/72 The Kingsway and the Y Storfa community services hub are among many schemes that will complement these developments. They show how committed we are to creating a thriving, modern city with more opportunities to work, live, study, shop and enjoy. "The private sector is also heavily investing in Swansea, with major schemes like Princess Quarter and the biophilic building also due for completion in 2025, supported by plans to bring the Mond Buildings on Union Street back into use and the opening of the Cosy Club at the Exchange Buildings in the Maritime Quarter." Also starting this year is work to transform Castle Square. The project will feature a substantial increase in green space including lawns and planting. .

  • Bydd nifer o gynlluniau mawr yn Abertawe naill ai wedi'u cwblhau neu'n gwneud cynnydd sylweddol eleni er mwyn cynyddu nifer yr ymwelwyr â chanol y ddinas ymhellach. Bydd y cynlluniau'n arwain at filoedd mwy o bobl yn gweithio yng nghanol y ddinas er mwyn helpu i ddenu nifer yr ymwelwyr y mae ei angen i gefnogi masnachwyr presennol a denu mwy o siopau a busnesau eraill. Mae'r datblygiadau y disgwylir iddynt gael eu cwblhau'n fuan yn cynnwys prosiect y swyddfeydd newydd yn 71/72 Ffordd y Brenin. Bydd y cynllun, a ddatblygir gan Gyngor Abertawe ac a ariennir yn rhannol gan Swyddfa Cyllid Ewropeaidd Cymru, yn darparu lle i 600 o swyddi. Mae dros 75% o'r swyddfeydd yn y datblygiad bellach dan gynnig a byddwn yn dechrau cyhoeddi'r tenantiaid dros yr wythnosau nesaf. Disgwylir hefyd i hwb gwasanaethau cymunedol Y Storfa yn hen uned BHS ar Stryd Rhydychen gael ei gwblhau eleni. Bydd yn cynnwys rhai o wasanaethau'r cyngor, prif lyfrgell gyhoeddus y ddinas, swyddfa Gyrfa Cymru yn Abertawe, Gwasanaeth Archifau Gorllewin Morgannwg, Cyngor ar Bopeth Abertawe a Chastell-nedd Port Talbot, Llyfrgell Glowyr De Cymru a gwasanaethau cyhoeddus eraill. Fel rhan o bartneriaeth y cyngor â'r arbenigwyr adfywio Urban Splash, disgwylir i waith adeiladu ddechrau eleni ar gyfer adeilad canolfan sector cyhoeddus newydd ar hen safle Canolfan Siopa Dewi Sant. Bydd cannoedd o aelodau staff y cyngor yn gweithio yno, ynghyd ag aelodau staff o sefydliadau sector cyhoeddus eraill. Meddai'r Cyng. Rob Stewart, Arweinydd Cyngor Abertawe, "Rydyn ni i gyd am gael canol dinas ffyniannus, ond rydym yn gwybod bod angen mwy o ymwelwyr ag ef er mwyn cefnogi'r masnachwyr presennol a denu mwy o siopau yn y dyfodol. "Dyna'r rheswm pam mae rhaglen adfywio sy'n werth £1 biliwn yn parhau er mwyn helpu i sicrhau bod miloedd mwy o bobl yn gweithio ac yn byw yng nghanol y ddinas. Bydd hyn yn creu'r gwariant y mae ei angen ar siopau i agor a ffynnu. "Mae Arena Abertawe eisoes wedi agor ac mae prosiectau i ailagor Theatr y Palace a Neuadd Albert wedi'u cwblhau. "Mae'r cynllun swyddfeydd newydd yn 71/72 Ffordd y Brenin a  gwasanaethau cymunedol Y Storfa'n rhai o gynlluniau niferus a fydd yn ategu'r datblygiadau hyn. Maent yn dangos ein hymrwymiad i greu dinas fodern sy'n ffynnu, gyda mwy o gyfleoedd i weithio, byw, astudio, siopa a mwynhau ynddi. "Mae'r sector preifat hefyd yn buddsoddi llawer mewn Abertawe, a disgwylir i gynlluniau mawr fel Ardal y Dywysoges a'r adeilad bioffilig hefyd gael eu cwblhau yn 2025. Ceir cynlluniau hefyd i ddefnyddio Adeiladau'r Mond ar Union Street unwaith eto ac i agor Cosy Club yn adeiladau'r Exchange yn yr Ardal Forol."

  • A new partnership aimed at further moving Swansea towards a net-zero future has been announced.   Swansea Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SSE Energy Solutions to work together towards helping the city reach net zero status by 2050.   Council Leader Rob Stewart said: “We all know about the impact climate change is having and will have, which is why we have set the ambitious target of becoming a net zero city within the next 25 years.   “As a council we have already taken some important steps with our new generation of energy-efficient homes, we have the biggest local authority electric vehicle fleet in Wales and we are leading on other projects which aim to both reduce our carbon footprint and boost and protect nature conservation.   “But we will only achieve net zero by all of us working together - the council, our public and private sector partners, residents and businesses.   “Our agreement with SSE Energy Solutions brings their expertise to the table as we work with them to decarbonise energy, foster green skills and create lasting opportunities for local communities while pioneering new pathways to a cleaner, greener future.”   Noel Powell, Head of Regeneration at SSE Energy Solutions, said: “This strategic partnership between SSE and Swansea Council marks a pivotal step in advancing Swansea’s journey towards a net zero future. By uniting SSE’s expertise in renewable energy solutions with Swansea’s ambitious low-carbon vision, we can accelerate the deployment of innovative energy projects and accelerate local green jobs to residents, businesses, and communities.   “Together, we are committed to making Swansea a model for clean energy leadership and achieving carbon neutrality for the Council by 2030 and for the city by 2050."
