On TikTok’s imposed deadline day for labels to sign direct terms to boycott Merlin, IMPALA Independent Music Companies Association has published an open letter calling for collaboration & specific action points to achieve a strong, cooperative partnership without strong-arm tactics. AIM’s interim CEO Gee Davy commented: “While some independents may be able to secure beneficial direct licenses, TikTok’s refusal to license with Merlin and self-imposed deadline today means that many will no longer have that choice. As a leader in the digital space, TikTok has an opportunity to demonstrate good practice and fulfil its stated intention to operate a level playing field and aid success “across genres and countries, established stars to those just starting out”, by re-engaging”. AIM is the not-for-profit trade body exclusively representing the UK’s independent music sector.
About us
AIM is the not-for-profit trade organisation representing and supporting the UK’s independent music community, which makes up over a quarter of the UK’s recorded music market. Now in its 25th year, AIM’s members range from the largest, most respected record labels and associated music businesses in the world to DIY or self-releasing artists and the next generation of entrepreneurs in music. These include 4AD, Black Acre, Beggars Group, Blue Raincoat, CTRL Music, Dirty Hit, Domino Recording Co, FAMM, Finesse Foreva, Hospital Records, Ninja Tune, Numbers, Partisan, Transgressive, Secretly Canadian, Stones Throw, Supernature, Warp, and XL Recordings. AIM exists to level the playing field for UK independent music businesses - the beating heart of music. No matter their genre, their background, how much money they have, how they identify or their age, AIM provides access to the knowledge and contacts creative entrepreneurs need to create, build and win. AIM supports its members, not only through the difficult times, but also on a day-to-day level with practical support that makes a real difference to their lives and work, helping them take their businesses to the next level.

We support the Statement on AI training, an open letter from thousands of musicians, artists, actors and other creators around the world. Please sign: https://lnkd.in/e33_-f7C AIM interim CEO Gee Davy commented: On behalf of the UK’s independent music community – businesses who are proud to work in partnership with artists – we support this statement from Fairly Trained. To achieve the benefits of AI for creativity, we urge policymakers not to lose sight of the need for strong copyright protections. This is vital to ensure a healthy future for those who create, invest in and release music across genres and all communities, regions and nations of the UK.”
