  • As part of our commitment to furthering the cause of sustainability within the aviation sector we've been keen to help educate the wider community on how to identify and avoid greenwashing. To do this we've created some training that we hope people will find useful. It's a short course comprising 5 chapters with a total duration of around 20 minutes. There are multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter. This is the first chapter. You can watch the entire course on our YouTube channel with this link: https://lnkd.in/eYD53YrN The course material was researched and developed by our teams at Aviation Net Zero and sister company FLETCHERWILSON, and in partnership with our sustainability officer Richard Nanton FRAeS FIoL, an expert within the aviation sector, and an expert on carbon auditing and management. The training is presented by Komal Verma and Richard Nanton. This training course is a pilot and is in development. We welcome feedback on whether this is useful and how it can be improved. This course hasn't had an official release but please feel free to share with anyone who you think might benefit. • Nat speaks with Lisa Belkhichane of Dassault Systèmes about how their tools and technology are able to improve the efficiency of aircraft and their systems. The interview explores how simulations and virtual twins can help manage the huge amounts of data associated with aircraft design, and optimise efficiency during design, operation, and end of life phases. Thanks to Lisa and Dassault Systémes for their time and insight. 🌱✈️🌍

  • In this interview Nat talks with Eleanor Dixon and Irene Monreal Campos from FAAM about the importance of FAAM's mission, and goes behind the scenes of their BAE146 mobile laboratory. From climate change and air pollution to weather and environmental disaster response, the FAAM Airborne Laboratory’s atmospheric research aircraft has completed 1400 science flights across 30 countries, 5 continents, and supported over 120 UK and international science projects. Capable of flying with up to 4 tonnes of scientific instruments, as low as 50 feet over the sea and 35,000 feet high in the atmosphere, flights can last between one and six hours, covering up to 2000 nautical miles. In recent years, the research aircraft has taken to the skies to monitor methane emissions from Scottish wetlands, improve summer storm predictions in southern England, calibrate a brand new weather satellite, and test the use of blended sustainable aviation fuel. The aircraft was the 1981 prototype BAE 146-100 (original registration G-SSSH) and BAE 146-300 variant after modification in 1984. Its prototype features - like the jump seat - made it ideal for conversion to an airborne laboratory in 2001 - including a reinforced fuselage, upgraded cabin pressure capabilities, a modified fuel system, and a switch to Honeywell LF507-1H turbofan engines. Watch to the end to see a tour of this fascinating aircraft. Filmed at The Royal International Air Tattoo 2024. 🌱✈️🌍 Watch this and other interviews on our YT channel: https://lnkd.in/eaJka_jA

  • The Royal International Air Tattoo is the largest military air show in the world with 150,000 people attending over 3 days in 2024. In this interview Nat talks with Briony Farmer who is the Sustainability Coordinator for RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises - the organisation that puts on RIAT. Briony is one of the team responsible for balancing the requirement to put on an entertaining air show with the need make it more sustainable. It's a challenge to make any event sustainable - let alone an air show of the size of RIAT and the discussion covers what RAFCTE is doing in this regard. This includes everything from helping visitors recycle their waste through to running aircraft on SAF where they can. Nat and Briony also discuss how an air show's mandate can be seen to be showcasing the future of sustainable aviation and how RIAT has a role to play informing future generations. We thank Briony, Matthew Davies, and RAFCTE for their time and insight. 🌍✈️🌱 Watch this and other interviews on our YT Channel - https://lnkd.in/eaJka_jA

  • Guido Harling is the founder and CEO of ETSverification GmbH an organisation which provides independent 3rd party verification of emission reports for CORSIA & ETS compliance. In this interview Guido and Nat Wilson talk about the importance of verification of emission reports, and discuss how verifiers have an important role to play helping ensure airlines report correctly. Guido provides tips for airlines around how to mitigate the compliance burden, and his views on the future of sustainability within the industry. Thanks for your time and insight Guido! ✈️ 🌱 🌍 View this and other interviews and explainers on our YT channel: https://lnkd.in/eaJka_jA

  • In this interview Igor Dimnik, VP of product at SITA walks us through their products OptiFlight and Eco Mission, both designed to help airlines become more sustainable by reducing carbon emissions and by optimising efficiency in flight operations. OptiFlight produces a unique model for each individual aircraft and drives optimisations based upon the models unique characteristics. Eco Mission helps airlines deliver more sustainable operations by accounting for multiple sustainable regulations and planning, optimising and auditing accordingly. Igor explains how the complexity around regulation doesn't sit singly with compliance, reporting, or sustainability teams - it's something that runs through multiple departments in an organisation. It's fascinating to go behind the scenes of the clever tools used to deliver sustainable aviation in practice - we thank Igor and SITA for their time. • In episode 9 of our Sustainable Aviation 101 series we look at hydrogen powered aircraft. Hydrogen appears to be a sustainable magic bullet on the face of it, but in reality there are huge challenges to meaningful implementation which we look into in this film. • Jay Pankowski is the Operations Support Manager at Wisk. He's uniquely placed to understand the complexity around the development of their Gen 6 aircraft which is an exciting and technically advanced EVTOL aircraft. Not only is this aircraft an EVTOL, it's also fully autonomous. Jay talked about development, how Boeing has been a key partner, as well as time line to certification, safety and sustainable credentials. • Nat Wilson chats with Dirk Singer, climate tech advocate and sustainable aviation author at Aviation Carbon Events '24. Dirk is a pragmatic expert in his field and his views are insightful and thought leading. Dirk and Nat chatted on a number of topics including how we should pay for a sustainable aviation future, and what the roadmap to sustainability might look like. For more insight we recommend the book that Dirk has co-authored with Shashank Nigam ✈ - here is a link to it: https://lnkd.in/ePpRayTJ View this and more films on the subject of sustainable aviation on our YT channel: https://lnkd.in/eaJka_jA

  • Welcome to January 2025! In part 8 of our Sustainable Aviation 101 series Richard Nanton FRAeS FIoL explains the benefits and challenges around electric aircraft. If you're reading this you're likely aware of the significant challenges we need to address. Taken as a whole our Sustainable Aviation 101 series gives a good basic grounding to the subject matter.
