Empowering young people from ethnically diverse and less advantaged communities to move into work, education or business

About us

Babbasa is a Bristol-based social enterprise supporting aspiring young people from disadvantaged communities to pursue their professional ambitions. We directly offer less advantaged young people (16-25) access to skills training programmes, mentors (industry professionals) and opportunities (work experience, employment and enterprise resource). We can also provide similar bespoke packages to educational institutions, corporate organisations and youth service providers for their beneficiaries. We also offer professional development programmes to help businesses and organisations create a more diverse and inclusive workforce and culture. For private and public sector organisations, Babbasa offers a unique opportunity for your staff to volunteer on social action projects, become mentors, invest responsibly as sponsors/funders, support as collaborating partners, or provide expert knowledge as an advisor to our management team. Babbasa's vision is to create a world where all young people are able to realise their employment and enterprise ambitions, irrespective of where they live, their nationality, ethnicity, gender, race, sexuality or faith. #OurCity2030

🌱 Meet Our Young People 🌱 We met up with one of our young people, Maxime, a 26-year-old singer-songwriter who works in festivals and events. Growing up, Maxime faced economic barriers, which led to struggles when trying to enter the creative industries. Earlier this year, Maxime joined Babbasa and has since participated in outreach work and was part of this year’s Challenge Programme cohort. “The challenge program has allowed me to meet other like-minded young people. We were quite a small group. We were about maybe 10 to 15 young people, and actually in that group, a lot of them had similar interests to me. So a big part of the challenge program was making friends” Through the programme, he has been able to develop skills such as public speaking, group working skills, event planning and other soft skills to help him feel more confident and ready for the workplace and beyond. 🌱 Insight Day with Planning Portal 🌱 Last week we had an amazing Insight Day at Planning Portal, tech-focused company that supports the building industry. Four young people had a great opportunity to learn about what goes into planning applications, the importance of policy, as well as understanding marketing and sales. Our young people had the chance to create their own marketing strategy on how to promote planning applications to young homeowners which was super fun and insightful! The top 3 things that the young people felt that they improved on: 🌱 Gained more knowledge and understanding of working within the industry 🌱 Helped to make connections with professionals within the industry 🌱 Helped to understand where to find information to help with future career plans and choices. Thank you for such a wonderful day Planning Portal ❤️

***Please help spread the word*** A couple of weeks ago I shared our EDI Directory with DMA as part of a project I’m working on focusing on people, talent and EDI (more on this when it launches...) and something amazing happened! Kate Burnett and Jessica Reilly replied with an email saying they have 50 full-funded spaces (meaning it’s totally FREE) for a new 3-year programme of support run by DMA Talent 🙌 Funded by the Marketing Skills Trust, it enables young people from under-represented groups to access accredited learning, career guidance and support to help them get into the marketing profession and start building a career in marketing. And at the end of it all, they’ll come away with a Professional Diploma in Marketing, accredited by the IDM. Awesome! The challenge is reaching those under-represented group and that’s where we need your help. We’re working through introducing DMA Talent to the organisations in our directory to tap into their networks, but 50 spaces is a lot. So, if anybody in my network, or my network’s networks, is able to share this amazing opportunity with those who are eligible, that would be incredible 🙏 Who it’s for: The programme is free of charge, but candidates must meet the criteria to qualify for 1 of the 50 places available in 2024. For the purposes of the programme, under-represented groups are as defined by the Advertising Association’s All In Survey as:   - Non-white ethnic groups - Neurodivergent individuals - Those with disabilities - Individuals from low-income households - Those who have not completed a higher education course To be accepted onto the programme, candidates must identify as being in one or more of the groups listed above, aged between 18 and 25 years, be unemployed or in the first three years of their career and not be a graduate.   Please help spread the word and if you know someone who'll benefit send them the link below which provides further info & the application form. 👉 https://lnkd.in/e7UkeNnB Aquaintz Consulting Grace M. ✨ Insight Day with LAH ✨ A few weeks ago, we had a great Insight Day at LAH Property Marketing, one of Europe’s largest asset managers and a major global investor across public and private markets. Five of our young people had the amazing opportunity to learn about different roles within real estate such as security, and cleaning, as well as how to manage properties, assets and facilities. Our young people had fun exploring VR-related scenarios and quizzes and gained lots of advice on how to get into the commercial real estate industry. The top 3 things that the young people felt that they improved on: ✨ Gained more knowledge and understanding of working within the industry ✨ Helped to make connections with professionals within the industry ✨ Improved general employability skills Thank you for a fantastic day! If you are a business or organisation interested in finding out more about how you can support young people through Insight Days such as this please get in touch with our Placement Programme Lead, Mallika. mallika.khan@byep.org.uk. #DiversityandInclusion #YouthEmpowerment #RecruitmentServices #OurCity2030 #2030by2030

🌱 National Inclusion Week 🌱 National Inclusion Week is a week long celebration between the 23rd - 29th of September. The event allows us to celebrate and reflect on the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels they belong, heard and valued both in and out of the workplace. Last week we hosted a Social Mobility Roundtable with other organisations working towards social mobility for young people within the city. We learnt more about the type of career progression support each other offered, and discussed the idea of a Social Mobility Alliance and how collaborating more closely could potentially be more impactful for the city’s young people. Watch this space for future developments. #OurCity2030

We had some interesting discussions last week at the social mobility roundtable for #OurCity2030 led by Poku Pipim Osei FRSA and Nina Skubala. The importance of getting people together in one room can never be underestimated, particularly for a multi-organisation, place-based approach like this. It was useful to map out support pathways, share challenges and explore opportunities for collaboration with Jess Woodsford, Xavier Baker, Maria Vitale, Nathan Ingram, Sangeetha Wynter, Molly Byrne, Martin Bisp, Siobhan Denniff and others. It's encouraging to see a genuine willingness to work together around our shared goals and establish how we can promote social mobility and meaningfully support underrepresented young people in the city. #OurCity2030 #socialmobility #socialimpact

We hosted another successful Mentor Club last week, which saw lots of meaningful conversations between Equal Opportunity Ambassadors (EOAs) and mentees, and many new connections made. 🌱🌟 The next Mentor Club will take place on 22nd October in conjunction with our Enterprise programme. Keep any eye out for booking details, which we'll be circulating shortly. 👀

We're excited to be hosting the next #OurCity2030 Employers’ Forum this week, an opportunity for businesses and professionals to come together and connect, learn about inclusion and social value practices. At the event, we will hear what we have learnt from the OurCity2030 Pathways Programme to date, from employers and young people who have taken part.
