We’re passionate about showcasing the most exciting art from around the world, pushing traditional artistic boundaries and helping us understand our lives in new and unexpected ways. Each year we present hundreds of different performances, events and exhibitions that entertain and inspire millions of people, create connections, provoke debate, and reflect the world we live in. Central to our purpose is supporting emerging talent, shaping opportunities that will accelerate the next generation of creatives. Opened in 1982, the Barbican is a unique and audacious building, recognised globally as an architectural icon. As well as our theatres, galleries, concert halls and cinemas, we are home to a large conservatory with over 1,500 species of plants and trees, a library, conference facilities, public and community spaces, restaurants, bars, and a picturesque lakeside oasis. Focussed firmly on the future, we’re working on ambitious plans to transform our building, reimaging what an arts centre can be and doing our part to address the climate crisis. Through our work on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, we will ensure the Barbican becomes a place where everyone belongs – where creativity, enterprise, and learning coexist, and everybody can achieve their fullest potential.

Last week, our Director for Arts and Participation Devyani Saltzman joined Sir John Tusa - former Managing Director and great friend of the Barbican - to talk about the state of the UK arts sector. Their wide-ranging discussion touched on comparisons with Canada; how different experiences of colonialism are playing out; the role of the arts in helping us connect and make sense of the world around us, and much more. What a great event. Thank you Audley for having us.
This morning Audley had the great pleasure of hosting a conversation about the state of the arts sector and education in the UK and beyond, with speakers Sir John Tusa – Audley Senior Advisor, renowned broadcaster, journalist, and former Managing Director of the BBC World Service – and Devyani Saltzman, Director for Arts & Participation at the Barbican Centre. At a time when so many public services are experiencing financial pressures and budget cuts, Sir John and Devyani painted a detailed picture of the challenges facing the arts sector today, including: ▪️ Sharp declines in funding for arts education ▪️ Barriers to access and the impact on arts participation ▪️ Fragmentation of discourse amongst stakeholders, creating risk. Many thanks to Sir John and Devyani for sharing their insights and expertise, from working in two of Britain’s most renowned cultural institutions, on these issues and how and why we should address them. Thanks also to our wonderful guests, who made many thoughtful and enlightening contributions during the Q&A – it was fantastic to hear about the creative strategies and imaginative ideas being explored to protect and champion this critically important sector. This morning’s event coincides with the release of Audley’s new Boxnote ‘Arts philanthropy and the future of giving in the UK and US.’ To read our analysis of how arts philanthropy is evolving, please get in touch at info@audleyadvisors.com. For 30 years, the City Bridge Foundation has been awarding hundreds of millions of pounds in support of London's charitable sector. Now they've launched a new scheme focusing on changing the systems that keep people marginalised. Find out more below 👇
Today marks the launch of our new funding policy, Standing with Londoners, outlining City Bridge Foundation's powerful commitment to social justice and solidarity that will shape our work for the decade ahead. Our focus will be on changing the systems that keep people marginalised, while also addressing the urgent issues communities face today. We have identified four bold visions for a fairer London, which will shape and guide our future funding programmes: 🔹Climate and environmental justice 🔹Access to justice 🔹Racial justice 🔹Economic justice This is about more than just funding, we will Stand with Londoners, using our voice, assets, and networks to advocate for social justice across our priority areas. Collaboration is key; by working alongside civil society, charities, communities, funders, government, and businesses, we can drive lasting change together. The first of our new funding programmes launches in autumn 2025, and this is just the beginning. 🔗 Read the full policy here: https://lnkd.in/eXZacHKj

🚀 Accelerate Action at the Barbican! 🚀 This week, the Barbican’s Women’s Network has been leading the charge in celebrating #IWD2025 with a series of inspiring events across the Centre. 💜✨ With this year’s theme—‘Accelerate Action’—we’re shining a spotlight on the need to break down systemic barriers and biases that stand in the way of gender equality. 🔹 We kicked off with a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring our Head of EDI, Emma Green, alongside Sarah Guerra (She,her), Equalities Director at the City of London Corporation, and expertly chaired by Aqsa Ahmed, our EDI Business Partner. 🔹 And opening today (6 March), we’re proud to present our Action Heroes exhibition—a tribute to some of the remarkable women of the Barbican, as nominated by their colleagues. This celebration of talent and impact will be available to view in our Level G Hub until Thursday, 13 March. Here’s to accelerating action, driving change, and celebrating the incredible women who make the Barbican what it is today! 💥💪 📸 Si Nipannan #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #EquityInAction #EDI

🎨✨ EDI is “not woke ideology or token gestures […] it is social justice, fairness, respect and inspiration; it is part of our civic purpose and is the lifeblood of what makes the arts so deeply important to society.” These were the words of Devyani Saltzman, the Barbican’s Director for Arts and Participation in a recent edition of The Stage (The Stage Media Company Ltd). Our EDI strategy, which launched in 2023, is rooted in the spirit of these words, and today we’re excited to share some of what we’ve been up to over the last 6 months: ✅ 150+ staff have received anti-racism training so far (delivered by Hustle Crew) ✅ Introduced a new Access and Adjustments Action Plan to improve accessibility for both staff and audiences ✅ Increased staff diversity data participation rates from 44% to 74%, providing a robust baseline to measure progress ✅ Launched a Parents, Carers & Guardians Network, expanding our diversity networks to five ✅ Launched the Inclusive Language Guide & Disability Inclusion Guidance ✅ Grew our Global Majority Network membership by 12%, with 70+ staff attending Black History Month events We’ve also been collaborating with colleagues at Tate, Victoria and Albert Museum, Natural History Museum, Royal Albert Hall, Imperial War Museums, Shakespeare's Globe, and Roundhouse to determine sector-wide best practices in centring audiences. At the Barbican, we are committed to becoming a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable organisation – a place where everyone belongs. We’re proud of the progress so far, but we know there’s much more to do. 📖 Read the full update covering our EDI work between August 2024 and January 2025, here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eCYDnP6K 📰 And read The Stage article, “Protect diversity initiatives, theatre leaders urge,” here 👉 https://lnkd.in/eA8_NYYC #EDI #DiversityAndInclusion #Equity #Belonging #Barbican #InclusiveWorkplace #Diversity #Inclusion #Equality #DEI
