Digital Eagles & Money Mentors | Product & Proposition Manager. Fraud & Scams Expert for Barclays.

It was a pleasure to participate in the #BBCScamSafe Hull roadshow last week. Alongside experts from HSBC, Visa and Age UK , I offered members of the public advice on how to stay #ScamSmart. Having previously being a victim of a scam myself online many years ago, sharing those ‘red flags 🚩’ and top tips is something that I’m so passionate about. Barclays data shows the average purchase scam claim so far this year is over £700, and with so many deals being advertised this week, here are my top tips on how to shop safely in this year's seasonal sales: ⌚Plan ahead and take your time. Always remember to stop and think. 🔗Go straight to the source: Be wary of links that are sent to you and instead go directly to retailers' official websites. 👓Read reviews: Shoppers will often flag bad experiences. Do your down research to avoid making the same mistake. Thanks to Stop Scams UK . A great example of industry collaboration!

🚨 Cheers Hull! 🚨 Day Four of the #BBCScamSafe road show took place in Hull today with Stop Scams UK members HSBC, Visa and Barclays all in attendance. David Callington, Head of Fraud at HSBC, Kirsty Adams, Fraud and Scams Expert at Barclays and Diane Ayres, Client Director at Visa, were on hand to answer questions from the general public on all things scam-related. Speaking to BBC Morning Live, Diane spoke about the dangers posed by deepfakes and how we can protect ourselves from being scammed. “On the surface, deepfakes can often look really good but there are some things you can look out for,” Diane said, following a short clip which showed a deepfake of BBC presenter Rav Wilding that Visa had created for Scam Safe week. On deepfakes, Diane added: “They struggle to replicate facial expression and movements as well. One thing to look out for are the eyes – if the eyes are too still or they don’t match the expression on the face, that’s something you can look out for. “When it comes to audio, you really need to look at if the person’s speech and lips aligned…is the voice a bit robotic, or a bit flat? Those are some of the tell-tale signs you can look out for.” Away from Hull, Tom Olsen, Customer Protection and Enforcement attorney at Amazon, appeared on Rip Off Britain to talk about impersonation fraud and how the company works with law enforcement to take down scammers. Offering his tips to viewers on how to stay safe from scammers, Tom told presenter Gloria Hunniford, “Beware of false urgency. If you feel that something doesn’t feel right or there’s talk about something needing to take place right away, just hang up. Amazon will never ask you for your password or your one-time passcode." A huge thank you to the teams at HSBC, Barclays and Visa for coming to Hull and for all their work in preparing for the day. Friday signals the final day of the road show as Scam Safe week draws to a close in Stockport. Nationwide Building Society and NatWest Group will be there to represent Stop Scams UK as well as chat with members of the public. If you’re nearby, come say hi!
