We’re pleased to reveal the six artists being supported to work with our Barnsley communities to create socially-engaged art through our ENGAGE / CREATE project. This is a unique chance for those chosen to explore and develop socially-engaged practice, which involves working closely with communities. Supported by the cultural development organisation Beam Arts UK, they will team up with people in our Principal Towns of Cudworth, Hoyland, Penistone, Royston, Wombwell and Goldthorpe over the coming months to co-create new artwork. The chosen artists are as follows: Wombwell: Izzy Dabiri, textile artist. Cudworth: Jayde Marie Bell (also known as Eye Violet), mural painter. Penistone: Lucy Burns, illustrator and mural painter. Goldthorpe: Tahir Shah - film producer, storyteller and director. Royston: jack Riley – theatre and community arts practitioner. Hoyland: Thomas Palmer – sculptor and potter. This project is funded by Cultural Development Fund Round 2 by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Arts Council England. It is part of our Storying Barnsley programme, which aims to boost Barnsley’s cultural and creative sectors through partnerships and connectivity and offer unique cultural experiences for people living and visiting the town. The chosen artists will receive mentoring and support from three experienced creatives and the team at Beam to help develop their social engaged practice. We can't wait to see how they come together with community members to produce some amazing new artwork, which will be showcased next year. South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority's 12-week public consultation on bus franchising is now open. Running until Wednesday 15 January 2025, this is the community's chance to comment on their proposals to bring buses back under public control. Doing so would give SYMCA the power to decide on bus routes and times, fare options and costs, and how buses, trams and trains can connect with each other, amongst other things. The consultation documents are available to view in the Library @ the Lightbox during its usual opening hours, and drop-in events will take place at the Digital Media Centre on Thursday 21 November (5pm-7pm) and the Pentecostal Community Church in Goldthorpe on Monday 2 December (5pm-7pm). For more information, and to have your say, go to https://lnkd.in/eiryNUwp

🚌 Have your say on taking back control of our buses 🚌 Today we’ve launched a 12-week public consultation to find out what you think about our proposals to introduce bus franchising in South Yorkshire to take control of the depots, bus fleet, routes and fares to make sure buses work better for the public. It will have an impact on the lives of people who live, work, study and visit South Yorkshire, so please take a look at the consultation document and fill in the short or long questionnaire: https://lnkd.in/eZ6sm7bD

We recently celebrated the community and voluntary groups that are starting important conversations about cancer prevention as part of our Take Action, Live Longer project. Local groups have been exploring creative ways to promote cancer screenings and raise awareness of the signs and symptoms for people to look out for in their local area. Funded by the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Cancer Alliance, it was great to celebrate everything these nine groups have done so far to champion positive health advice in their communities. Made possible by our brilliant partnerships with Barnsley CVS and NHS South Yorkshire ICB, you can read more about the project here: https://bit.ly/3Ad1ulJ #BeThatFriend #HealthyBarnsley

It's #BlackHistoryMonth and our BME RISE (Race. Identity. Social. Equity) Network celebrated with some lively and engaging events. It was fantastic to see so many colleagues join in, and we want to give a big thank you to the network for organising such a wonderful cultural experience. This event truly showed the power of cultural exchange and the importance of celebrating our diverse backgrounds, enabling our work environment to become more inclusive and supporting our staff to bring their whole selves to work. 👏

Erodatools Ltd, a precision engineering company using sparks of electrical energy to cut through metal, has invested in solar panels to reduce sky-high energy bills. The second-generation family business has gained grant support to help install 240 solar panels on the roof of the Penistone factory it has owned for 52 years. The new 102kwp photovoltaic system will generate more than 72,000 kwh of green energy a year, helping to slash their annual electricity bill by £17,000 and reduce carbon emissions by 14.07 tonnes a year too. The investment has been backed by a Low Carbon Grant delivered by us through Net Zero Barnsley and supported by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority; part-funded by the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). #SustainableBarnsley Read more: https://lnkd.in/gvXZsypQ

We were honoured to welcome His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to Barnsley today, where he officially dedicated the Tommy Taylor Memorial Bridge in memory of the former Barnsley FC, Manchester United and England striker who was tragically killed in the Munich air disaster in 1958. He was just 26 when he was killed among 23 fatalities of the disaster, including Wombwell-born defender Mark Jones. Although Mark played his entire career for Manchester United, he too is still remembered as a sporting hero in Barnsley. Tommy Taylor’s name was chosen for the bridge following a public consultation earlier this year, and the Duke joined legendary Manchester United players Brian Kidd and Alex Stepney, Barnsley’s record appearance holder Barry Murphy, and members of the Taylor family to unveil a new plaque and officially rename the bridge in Tommy’s memory.
