Barocal is a spin-out of the University of Cambridge developing breakthrough cooling and heating technologies.

About us

Barocal is a spin-out from the University of Cambridge developing new technologies to decarbonise the global cooling and heating sector. Based on 15 years of research, Barocal discovered novel materials that can entirely replace polluting refrigerant gases. At the same time, our systems enables 2-3 higher energy efficiencies than conventional systems, resulting in significantly lower costs. This single technological breakthrough addresses 40% of global emissions and could put us back on track for the 1.5°C global warming target. Get in touch to learn more.

    🚀  𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴!🌍❄️🔥 Our team—Florian SchabusSibylla Heckmann, and Mohsen Elabbadi — had a great time attending Chillventa 2024, the leading global event for the 𝗛𝗩𝗔𝗖-𝗥 industry. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage with some of the 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 in the industry and exchange ideas on the 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴. 🌱💡 We participated in insightful talks and in-depth industry discussions focused on advancing 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 and 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗴𝗮𝘀-𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀.     🌍 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰! 🌍 We were proud to have showcased the 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 at the 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 conference, hosted by our founder, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. Xavier Moya, at the University of Cambridge! The event brought together leading academics in the field of 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 to explore the future of heating and cooling. 🚀 We were thrilled to have unveiled the 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 at the conference, showcasing our prototype. This demonstration highlighted the potential of 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱-𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 to transform the cooling industry. Unlike conventional systems, our technology eliminates the need for harmful 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀, providing a cleaner, greener alternative to traditional vapour-compression methods. It was an exciting moment to see our prototype in action— especially when we served cold beers directly from the barocaloric fridge! 🍻❄️ 🍹 Throughout the conference, discussions revolved around the critical need to phase out traditional refrigerants like HFCs, which have a significant environmental impact. Barocal’s solid-state technology offers a breakthrough solution with 𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹. We’re committed to scaling this innovation to meet growing market demand, providing a sustainable and energy-efficient alternative for 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.     🌏 Wrapping Up the Climate First Japan Roadshow! 🇯🇵 What an incredible journey it’s been for us at the Climate First Roadshow in Japan! Over the past week, Florian Schabus had the privilege of presenting our cutting-edge barocaloric technology and connecting with some of Japan’s top investors, corporates, and strategists. Key highlights: 📍 Day 1: We first had the privilege of meeting Global Brain Corporation, who focus on early to growth-stage companies in technology, AI, and healthcare! Afterward, we had the opportunity to present Barocal to Energy & Environment Investment, Globis Capital Partners, Diamond Edge Ventures, Inc., and SoftBank Group Corp. Presenting our vision to these key players was an amazing start! 📍 Day 2: At the Plug and Play Japan event, we had the chance to connect with over 50 influential companies. Following that, we were able to meet ORIX Group, SPARX Group, SBI Investment, Sony Ventures and Isomer Capital. We discussed decarbonization and the role our technology can play in Japan’s sustainability efforts. 📍 Day 3: Final meetings with industry giants like Toshiba, Archetype Ventures Inc., Itochu ITC Ventures XI, Dentsu Ventures, and Sumitomo Corporation capped off a week full of exciting conversations and potential collaborations.
