🔍 How Is Steel Made? A Journey from the 1800s to Today At Barrett Steel, we've been a part of the steel industry since the 1800s, when the Bessemer Process revolutionised steelmaking. In those days, molten pig iron was transformed into steel by blasting it with air and removing impurities like carbon. This process laid the foundation for modern steel production and enabled the mass production of steel that helped build the world as we know it. Fast forward to today, and there a now a number of ways to produce steel products: 🏭 Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS): The BOS route uses molten iron from blast furnaces, combined with scrap steel, and injects oxygen to remove impurities. This process is still responsible for most of the world’s steel production. ♻️ Electric Arc Furnace (EAF): By contrast, the EAF method allows us to significantly reduce embodied carbon by using a much higher percentage of recycled steel. As a result, EAF steel has a much lower carbon footprint compared to traditional steelmaking methods. ⚡ Sustainability & Renewable Energy: Today, we support a whole of market offering including BOS, EAF and Recycled and Renewably produced products that use recycled materials and renewable energy. This allows us to support our customers requirements, especially around Embodied Carbon targets on projects. We're proud to showcase a fantastic commercial staircase project that was bespoke fabricated and installed by one of our talented customers. This type of project is a true example of the strength of our supply-chain capabilities. Our customer was supported by their local depot, which provided the raw steelwork, including beams and hollow sections for fabrication. You'll then notice this steelwork project was expertly finished with oak handrails, stainless bracket arms, saddles, crossbar holders and 16mm tube. At Barrett Steel we have our own in-house stainless and glass brand Fastec Handrail Systems Limited who can supply all these components, and more.
