Lots of enthusiasm for Place-Based Impact Investing... but how do you connect global asset managers with the UK's local and combined authorities and the needs, specificities and opportunities of local areas? One answer is this creative collaboration among West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, global infrastructure manager Amber Infrastructure Limited and BBRC, a place-based impact investor focused on the South West. Together they have crafted the Green Growth West Fund, which will invest in the West's renewable energy, low-carbon transport and nature recovery. The Combined Authority has provided £10 million in anchor capital, and the project is making progress in attracting private capital to reach its target of £100 million. BBRC is providing investment readiness services for local projects, identifying local pipeline projects and contributing to attracting additional capital (it has already brought £70 million of investment into the region). In so doing, BBRC covers an important gap in the collaboration between local communities and global asset managers. Now all we need is more BBRCs... https://lnkd.in/ecf-JF3R #impactinvesting #greenfinance #renewableenergy #placemaking #localauthorities Danielle Rossingh Joanne Patrick Ed Rowberry Laura Barrow Dan Watson Impact Investing Institute The Good Economy

A game-changing £100 million green growth initiative in the region has taken another step forward, as the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority names an international leader in responsible infrastructure investment to manage the Fund. The Green Growth West Fund is a new impact fund for the region. It will be managed by Amber Infrastructure Limited, working with BBRC who are currently providing investment readiness services to the region, identifying investment opportunities and attracting investment to the region. The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, led by Mayor Dan Norris, has provided an initial £10 million investment into the fund, to leverage confidence to potential investors and demonstrate the region’s commitment to lead on the green economy. The Fund is seeking to secure a further £90 million in private and public investment over the next 12-24 months. The ambitious initiative is designed to invest in the region’s mid-scale infrastructure and growth-ready businesses to help them seize the opportunities of the Net Zero transition. The fund could supercharge the region’s renewable energy, low-carbon transport and nature recovery efforts, supporting the creation of 9,000 green jobs and helping to generate £300 million of turnover growth for local businesses. 🆕 Unlocking capital to drive inclusive growth in regional economies is a key challenge, and opportunity, for the UK. In our new report, "SME Finance: A Place-Based Impact Investing Perspective," Sam Monger shares insights from last November's PBII Network meeting, where investors, policymakers, and place-based impact practitioners explored ways to unlock more institutional and private capital to support SMEs across the regions. The report highlights: 📌 The investment gap facing SMEs between early-stage funding and larger-scale institutional investment 📌 The importance of catalysing growth beyond capital. Finance alone is not enough – SMEs need management expertise, networks, and market access to unlock scale. 📌 The potential for institutional investors to mobilise funding by acting as cornerstone investors in regional SME finance funds, supporting innovative financing models and using long-term patient capital to scale regional businesses. We are grateful to the following for sharing their expertise, insights and experience: Tom Taylor (British Private Equity & Venture Capital Association (BVCA)), Amy Crofton (Foresight Group), Caroline Norbury, OBE (Creative UK, Jari Moate (BBRC), Lisa Smith (Midlands Mindforge), Jamie Broderick (Impact Investing Institute). 📖 Read the full report to learn more about the ideas shaping place-based SME finance and how to get involved.

Great work from Abundance Investment and Bristol City Council, with the launch of the first financial product from the Net Zero Investment Co-Innovation Lab programme. The programme will address the economic barriers to achieving Net Zero within Bristol, funded by European Horizons, with the money raised supporting the installation of energy efficiency measures in buildings around Bristol. The buildings that will benefit from the first round of investment will provide services for local people, including community facilities and children's respite care.
