What is the age of 'internet adulthood' - and could plan to raise it to 16 help teenagers? BCL’s Julian Hayes comments on the new safer phones bill proposed by Labour MP Josh MacAlister. The proposed legislation aims to help stop young people from being damaged by social media and mobile phone content by banning social media account creation for children aged 13-16 without parental consent as well as banning phones in school. Julian warns that if sites are required to use "age gating" and age verification, that introduces other issues. "Requiring verifiable ID to access websites or apps raises significant privacy and freedom of speech issues, and risks excluding adults who do not themselves have the requisite ID," Hayes said. https://lnkd.in/ewg-XKez

It was fantastic to see so many of our clerking friends come together for a night of laughs, tricky questions, and a bit of team spirit. Congratulations to the winning team (Jenna Gayle, Three Raymond Buildings, and 2 Harcourt Buildings)… and well done to all the clerks who attended - you made it a night to remember! A special shout-out to our Quiz Mistresses, Ellen Peart and Shula de Jersey, who kept the energy high and the questions flowing! Swipe through the pictures to relive some of the night’s best moments. Espionage Defence: Navigating the Unnavigable With espionage on the rise in the UK and EU, defending those accused is more complex than ever. Recent media reports have highlighted growing efforts by individuals, allegedly on behalf of Russia and China, to obtain sensitive information, especially in the wake of the war in Ukraine. As Russia targets NATO support for Ukraine, intelligence and law enforcement agencies across the US, UK, and EU face obstacles in coordinating investigations and prosecution. But once espionage charges are brought, how can defence attorneys navigate these seemingly indefensible cases? Michael Drury, Of Counsel at BCL Solicitors LLP, joined a distinguished panel to tackle this question in an engaging discussion. From cross-border coordination challenges to the practicalities of representation, this session explored the intricacies of espionage defence and what it takes to successfully defend in these high-stakes cases. The panel shared insights into one of the most challenging areas of defence law today.
