About us
The Early Career Group Committee are responsible for organising events and courses aimed specifically at young professionals in the geotechnical engineering industry. The ECG are also responsible for arranging competitions and reporting to the BGA Executive Committee on matters affecting ECG members. The ECG provides an opportunity for knowledge sharing, debate, and networking. The group aspires to build a strong network between it’s members and the wider geotechnical engineering community, and to represent the views of early career members to the BGA. There are two main groups operating at present: London and the South West To get in touch please contact bga-ecg@britishgeotech.org.uk or any one of the committee members. We are thrilled to announce that Network Rail are sponsoring and exhibiting at the 2024 British Geotechnical Association Early Career Group (BGA ECG) networking event, on the 24ᵗʰ October at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), One Great George Street Network Rail manages the UK’s railway infrastructure, comprising 20,000 miles of track and over 190,000 aging earthwork assets including embankments, soil cuttings, and rock cuttings. Geotechnical engineers at NR examine and monitor these assets to assess their stability and serviceability, using advanced technologies such as remote sensing and automatic failure detection systems. As part of R&D projects, we test the safe use of emerging technologies such as large-scale geophysical measurements, weather hazard predictions, and machine learning. Deteriorating slopes are prioritised for stabilisation works and operational mitigations to enhance the safety and reliability of the railway infrastructure. Ground investigation and design work for such stabilisation works are carried out either in house or by external consultants. Thank you for your support!

British Geotechnical Association Early Career Group (BGA ECG) reposted this
Ground Engineering starts search for early career contributors Ground Engineering Magazine (GE) has launched its early career contributor initiative, which replaces the previous student editor role. This new scheme is open to a broader range of early career professionals, including undergraduates, master’s students, PhD candidates, (degree) apprentices, recent graduates, and early career professionals with less than five years of work experience (or less than three years if they have completed their PhD). Anyone studying or working within geotechnics, civil engineering, construction, engineering geology or other geoscience-related disciplines – and with a keen interest in ground engineering – is welcome to apply. Selected contributors will have the opportunity to write for GE’s Early Career blog - currently still known as the Student Editor blog - with posts published regularly on the GE website. While this is an unpaid position, selected contributors will receive free entry to GE conferences and the GE Awards in 2025, as well as a year’s free print and digital subscription to the magazine. To apply for the early career contributor initiative, please fill out this survey form: https://lnkd.in/eECeQu_2 The deadline for applications is midnight on 8 November 2024. #groundengineering #geotechnical #geoscience #students #earlycareer
