The #SpringStatement from Chancellor Rt Hon Rachel Reeves focused on balancing the books, alongside a boost to the defence budget, but there were some important developments for the #LifeSciences sector in the small print ⤵️ 💼 𝗥&𝗗 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳 🔹 A new consultation on tackling tax advisers who are promoting fraudulent claims in the R&D tax schemes will help protect the scheme for life sciences, which BIA has called for. 🔹 500 additional HMRC tax compliance inspectors were announced, who may work on R&D tax relief and could reduce the burden on compliant sectors like life sciences. 🔹 A consultation was announced on reforming advance clearances for R&D tax relief, following meetings BIA has had with officials and ministers. 🚀 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭-𝐮𝐩𝐬 🔹 Government committed to working with investors and companies to ensure the UK is the best place to start and grow a company. 🔹 This includes looking at Enterprise Management Incentives (EMIs) and venture capital investment incentives. 🔹 A consultation will look at employee tax treatment and stamp duty for a new shares trading venue for private companies (PISCES) 🛂 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐬 🔹 Visa costs will increase by 5%, a blow to the science community that already has significant complaints over their ability to attract international talent. The Statement signalled that innovative start-ups and scale-ups are still a priority and there's an opportunity for a constructive dialogue around key issues for the life sciences. The BIA will continue to work closely with the government on these issues on behalf of the sector. 📣 Join Steve Bates OBE FMedSci, CEO of BIA, and Dr Martin Turner Director of Policy and External Affairs, tomorrow for an in-depth dive into the Spring Statement and what it means for #LifeSciences ➡️ https://ow.ly/5s9Y50VjZ71 #RachelReeves #SpringBudgetStatement #UKgovernment
