Twenty years ago, an idea became a reality – CPI was born ✨ We started with two people, one desk in the North East of England, and a clear vision for a better future. Nigel Perry MBE FREng, our former CEO and current board member, was one of those two people there on day one. He sat down with our current CEO, Frank Millar, at The Catalyst to revisit those early days, tell us the story of how CPI came to be, and reminisce over an incredible 20 years. CPI is once again an official nominator for The Earthshot Prize 2025 🌍 The Earthshot Prize echoes CPI's mission to empower innovators to build a sustainable future through innovation. Being an official nominator is a great recognition of our commitment to the shared goal of ensuring a positive impact and ultimately repairing our planet. The initiative is based on five Earthshots for 2030: 🌳 Protect and restore nature 💨 Clean our air 🌊 Revive our oceans ♻️ Build a waste-free world 🌡️ Fix our climate Every year, 15 finalists are selected and receive tailored support from a global alliance of partners. Five of those finalists are announced winners and each is awarded £1 million to scale their solutions. As official nominators, we're looking to speak with companies who are innovating in one or more of the Earthshot challenges and align with our world-leading technical scale-up capabilities and expertise. The hub is part of a new £15 million Translational Innovation Hub Network, funded by LifeArc and Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life limiting inherited condition that currently has no cure. People living with CF are susceptible to repeated lung infections, which may be difficult to treat and resistant to antibiotics 🫁 Phage therapies have the potential to treat a wide range of lung infections. CPI is excited to work closely with the University of Liverpool to develop this technology and provide an alternative method to treating antibiotic-resistant infections in people with CF. 90 billion! That's the number of plastic pieces discarded by UK households annually, of which only 17% are recycled. Plastic waste is just one example of a highly wasteful relationship with materials and resources. This needs to change in order to combat climate change and survive on our planet 🌍 One way to achieve this change is a circular economy in which we Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover. The circular economy is a model in which materials and products are reused sustainably in a process that allows us to reduce our carbon footprint. This results in a better system that keeps materials in circularity and cuts down carbon emissions that come from raw material manufacture or extraction ♻ At CPI, sustainability and impact are the core of our work, and we aim to create a better world for people, places, and our planet. Dan Noakes, our Systemic Challenge Lead, tells us more about the circular economy ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eWTuWYKq Louise Barker Graeme Cruickshank Steve Jackson Kris Wadrop Darren Ragheb #Impact | #CircularEconomy | #CEweek2024 #LetsInnovateTogether | #Innovation | #Sustainability

What are the Planetary Boundaries? 🌍 The Planetary Boundaries define the safe operating spaces for nine Earth systems. We’ve already overshot six, and we’re about to overshoot the seventh 🚧 These boundaries are a warning bell for societies. They’re also a data-driven framework to drive innovation that will shape a future informed by planetary stewardship. At CPI, we’re leveraging our expertise and network within the innovation ecosystem to help restore the planetary boundaries: 🥩 Cultivated meat: we’ve helped 3D Bio-Tissues develop an ethical and sustainable nutrient system for growing cultivated meat, an alternative protein that can reduce the impact livestock meat farming has across all nine boundaries. 🌾 Natural fertilisers and biopesticides: that we’ve helped develop with Azotic Technologies Ltd. and EcoStack can help reduce ozone depletion, restore nutrient flows and regenerate ecosystems. 🎁 Bio-based packaging: like that developed by OCEANIUM can reduce the load of novel entities like plastics on the environment. The Foundation Industries employ 250,000 people in the UK 🏭 But in a sector that struggles to attract people at the start of their careers, a lack of diversity could be a crucial barrier that prevents innovation and adaptation to decarbonisation and changing global markets. How do we change that? As a founding member of the FISC (Foundation Industries Sustainability Consortium), we’re working with local organisations in the Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) industrial heartland to close skills gaps and open up opportunities for more people👷🏾♀️ 👩🏽💼 👩🏻🏭 We recognise the importance of diversity and that representation matters. Diversity and inclusion are essential for innovation. At CPI we recognise this through various initiatives, activities, and policies, one of which is our employee led affinity groups. Let’s meet Jason Rose, our Strategy Implementation Planning Lead and an active member within CPI’s affinity groups⬇️ He was the first male member of WiCPI, our employee-led Women in CPI affinity group, a community focused primarily around the support and empowerment of women within CPI. Jason is also one of our STEM Ambassadors, engaging in a variety of outreach activities that promote STEM disciplines to students from all socioeconomic backgrounds, genders, and ethnicities ensuring equal opportunities for all. Our affinity groups act as a safe space for our people to discuss and share experiences. Members are committed to making our work environment as inclusive as possible , so diversity and inclusion are not just abstract concepts and are practically implemented across the business.
