Episode 31 sees our Chief Executive James Thomas in conversation with Senior Social Worker Noreen Hussain, as they reflect upon social work in Birmingham, working with children with disabilities and - of course - our recent Ofsted visit. We used to be called Children’s Services and be run by Birmingham City Council. For a long time our services were inadequate, and we needed to do much more to support disadvantaged children and young people in the city and make sure they were safe. We started making some important improvements – listening to and learning from others, improving our social work practice and supporting our staff to do their jobs well. We became a Children’s Trust in April 2018 to help us accelerate these changes. Our Trust is owned by, but independent from, Birmingham City Council. This means it can do things differently, and make changes so that disadvantaged young people in the city are better looked after. We’re known as a Community Interest Company. The Council is still responsible for making sure young people in the city are safe and happy, and will monitor the Trust’s work closely to make sure it is doing its job well.

Our third and final special edition of the Birmingham Children's Trust podcast for Black History Month is now live! Episode 30, 'Being Black', sees Melissa Jackson sit down with our Head of Service for Contextual Safeguarding Clair Graham to discuss how Birmingham Children's Trust helps our foster care children both navigate and embrace their identity. Clair is a foster carer herself, and speaks candidly about the process of first discovering, and then helping her foster son understand his identity in preparation for life ahead. As Clair puts it: "It's important when we're placing or matching children to foster carers that their identity needs can be met. Because it's not just about race, it's about culture, it's about understanding the value base of where you come from, it's about the DNA of your family and your ancestral links." This is outstanding and will benefit our children in a huge way. A huge Trust thank you to everyone who supported this.
We're delighted to share that we packed 100 #ComfortCases for children in care yesterday! 📦🎒These cases are now on their way to local children entering foster care, offering a small source of comfort during challenging times. Sarah Scott, Head of HR at Auctus Management Group, brings a personal connection to this fundraising project. "Some of you know that my children are adopted. When I discovered Comfort Cases, it struck a chord. Our daughter, only four then, remembered wearing the same clothes until her foster family could provide more. She was fortunate to keep some cuddly toys, but not all children have that opportunity," Sarah shares. Moved by these stories, Auctus Management Group Ltd and its member RSS Infrastructure Ltd partner with Comfort Cases UK and Birmingham Children's Trust (England) to provide essential backpacks to children as they enter care. These comfort cases contain items like pyjamas, cuddly toys, toiletries, and books- small comforts that can make a big difference. A huge thank you to Sarah Jacoby and Sammi Myers from Comfort Cases UK for joining us yesterday and Alex Hillman and Dawn Crookes from Birmingham Children's Trust. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible!❤️ #nomorebinbags #treasuresnottrash

The Birmingham Children's Trust podcast is back with a bang: Episode 28 is out now! Hosted by Jadieal Millwood, a Senior Youth Worker at Birmingham City Council, this is the first of three special episodes for Black History Month. Up first, we were delighted to host special guests Antonio Henry, founder of MADE CIC, Omar Junior, founder and director of The Study of Men and Michael Gordon, director of Gordon Brooks Property & Crossroads Housing and Support. Alongside Jadieal, the trio sit down to discuss why Birmingham's children and young people need more black men to volunteer their time to work with and support them. As Michael puts it: "We live in a society that doesn't portray positive images of black men often enough, or it is overshadowed by typical stereotypes. It's about them seeing that we are not the stereotype, we do have examples of successful black men within our society and they too can aspire to be that." It's an eye-opening and honest conversation that explores the challenges facing our young black men, with each of the guests offering valuable insights and perspectives on the causes of and solutions to why we don't have enough black male volunteers.
