NEW LEADER APPOINTED Councillor Jane Yates has been elected as the new Leader of the Council at a full council meeting on Wednesday 29 January 2025. Councillor Yates represents Shirebrook South and takes over the Leadership from Councillor Steve Fritchley who retired from the position. Councillor Yates is joined by Councillor Donna Hales (Bolsover North and Shuttlewood) who takes up the position of Deputy Leader. Cllr Yates expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Council saying, “Firstly I would like to thank members for putting their trust in me. I would also like to thank the previous Leadership for their support since I was elected in 2023 and giving me the opportunity to join the Junior Cabinet allowing me to build upon my experience.” Councillor Yates named three members of her Cabinet (Councillor John Ritchie (Growth), Councillor Mary Dooley (Health and Wellbeing) and Councillor Clive Moesby (Resources), but stated she was still undertaking interviews for the remaining positions, which will be announced in March. Cllr Yates added, “I pledge to build upon the achievements of the previous leadership and will build upon our corporate aims. One of the main issues we need to deal with is local government restructuring. It is happening and I want to put this at the heart of what we do, that’s why I will be creating a post on my Cabinet to deal with this and work to ensure we remain influential and well represented at the decision making tables. “I am incredibly proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity as Leader of Bolsover District Council and working with my colleagues and the officers we will strive to deliver top class services and deliver on our growth agenda for the benefit of our residents.”

We are developing our first ever Tree and Woodland strategy to help improve air quality, enhance biodiversity and create vibrant outdoor spaces for future generations. We are working with leading experts in this field, Treeconomics, to look at the canopy across Bolsover District and set out how we can ensure that all communities get good access to trees and woodland. It will encompass a range of goals, including: - increased tree planting - protection of existing woodlands - long-term plans for tree maintenance and conservation efforts. By fostering a healthy tree canopy, we will be aiming to mitigate climate change impacts, increase natural habitats for wildlife and improve the well-being of local communities. As climate change tightens its hold with warmer, wetter winters and drier hotter summers, coupled with more extreme weather events, the strategy will reflect our ambitions to cherish trees and woodlands and make them more resilient and adaptable. https://lnkd.in/eV7vpgFS

We have introduced a relaxed mowing area. We have designated our first site to be included under a trial scheme that will see certain sites receive a more relaxed grounds maintenance approach to enhance biodiversity. The Queen’s Orchard is a piece of land at our headquarters in Clowne and has been specifically chosen due to the nature of the trees and surrounding grassland. The site has been launched during National Tree Week and includes specially erected signs that indicate the area is part of a relaxed mowing approach and depicts the benefits to wildlife. The Queen’s Orchard consists of a Crab Apple tree, gifted from the Queen’s Green Canopy together with an additional eight local apple tree varieties provided by us through our Bolsover Community Woodlands project with Woodland Trust funding. The grassland around the apple trees will be managed differently, allowing it to grow long during the summer months to encourage a more diverse range of wildflowers and grasses to provide a vital source of nectar for many bees, butterflies, beetles and other insects.
